Report: Golden Boy Files $300 Million Suit Against Haymon

Wednesday, May 6

According to an official press release on the lawsuit obtained by BoxingNews24.com, Haymon is being accused of "repeatedly and brazenly" breaking the rule and spirit of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act. Golden Boy Promotions founder and president Oscar De La Hoya is quoted in the piece, providing greater insight for the lawsuit:

"

During my 25 years in boxing, I have watched far too many fighters be chewed up, spit out and left with nothing to sit idly by while Mr. Haymon flaunts a federal law meant to protect those who put everything on the line to entertain fans of our sport. The Muhammad Ali Act was passed to help fighters avoid the fate that bedeviled so many of our predecessors; and I will do everything in my power to ensure this crucial piece of legislation is upheld and followed.

"

Per the website's report, the lawsuit alleges that among Haymon's biggest violations is he often "serves as both manager of his fighters and promoter of their fights..."

Bernard Hopkins, who is a co-owner of Golden Boy Promotions, is also quoted in the report as saying that he has "first-hand" experience with Haymon's business practices after he was "refused a lucrative fight with a Haymon-managed fighter..."

The lawsuit comes one week after Sports Illustrated published a letter online from the Association of Boxing Commissions to United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking the Justice Department to take action against Haymon for possible violations of the Ali Act with his Premier Boxing Champions as a specific breach.

Haymon is one of the most powerful people in boxing. He's an adviser to Floyd Mayweather Jr., who specifically thanked the controversial figure after the fight with Manny Pacquiao was set. His widespread influence on the sport has been a source of debate among fans and analysts.
