Weather: Not good news, according to the BBC there is a good chance of it being cold and wet in Dublin. Rain is forecast to fall late in the afternoon, so there is a chance of getting away with a shortened game.

Overview

Over a month after reaching the 2015 Cricket World Cup quarter-finals, Ireland will return to the cricket field for the first time. They will play an England team which consists largely of fringe players in a once-off ODI, which has been shoehorned into England’s summer schedule ahead of their series against New Zealand.

Mark Wood, David Willey, James Vince, Jason Roy, Lewis Gregory, Zafar Ansari and Sam Billings are all names those who do not follow English domestic cricket closely will be unfamiliar with.

It is the first time England will play one-day cricket since being eliminated at the group stages during the Cricket World Cup, and James Taylor, who will serve as stand-in captain, while Eoin Morgan is playing in the Indian Premier League, had previously called it a “new era” for English cricket, according to the BBC.

That new era might have to wait a while as Ireland are very much favourites to win this fixture. Their effort in the World Cup showed that they are capable of competing with and beating some of the best teams in the world. England, meanwhile, will have to rely on a largely inexperienced side who have not played any cricket together as a group.

Ireland, meanwhile, will want to prove once again that their performance in the World Cup was by no means a fluke. Their bowling struggled during the World Cup, but that should not be too much of a problem against a relatively inexperienced England side. If the weather holds, we could be in for a cracker of a match.

Key players

Ireland

Alex Cusack was Ireland’s best bowler by a country mile with seven wickets at an average of 24.57. England might have clobbered together an inexperienced team, but there are a few destructive batsmen lurking who can pack a punch. Cusack will be the go-to man to help stem the flow of runs.

England

James Taylor played for England during the World Cup, with his most impressive score coming against Australia during the group stages. He hit an unbeaten 98 off 90 balls, but it wasn't enough to lift England out of the doldrums in their chase of 342.

They collapsed to 231 all out, handing Australia a mammoth 111-run win. He has since played plenty of first-class cricket, with four half-centuries in four matches and will be integral in helping England build a big total.

Squads

Ireland: Andy McBrine, Niall O'Brien, Stuart Thompson, Craig Young, George Dockrell, Andrew Balbirnie, Gary Wilson, Paul Stirling, Kevin O'Brien, John Mooney, Alex Cusack, William Porterfield, Ed Joyce

England: James Taylor, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid, David Willey, James Vince, Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Lewis Gregory, Steven Finn, Tim Bresnan, Sam Billings, Zafar Ansari, Jonathan Bairstow
