5-Star Georgia Signee Terry Godwin to Work out for Atlanta Braves
Terry Godwin has the makings of a game-changing playmaker who could make an immediate impact when he arrives at Georgia as a freshman this summer.
However, another Peach State program is suddenly piquing his interest—the Atlanta Braves.
Godwin, a 6'0", 168-pound wide receiver and defensive back prospect from Callaway High School in Hogansville, Georgia, was invited to a predraft Braves camp on May 28, according to Michael Carvell of The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Aside from his football exploits, he also shines as an infielder at Callaway.
Naturally, speed is one of his greatest attributes.
Godwin has tallied 15 stolen bases on 16 attempts this season, per Carvell, complementing a .305 batting average and 90 mph throws. He's widely viewed as a third baseman.
Callaway baseball coach Dusty Hubbard described the Bulldogs commit as an athlete with immense potential beyond the gridiron during his conversation with Carvell:
"He’s such an instinctual infielder and has a great arm. He’s raw with his hitting. And that’s more because of the timing of it. He has always been a three-sport guy. To be a really good hitter in baseball, it just takes so much time. But that one thing he does have is a lot of pop in his bat. He’s got the ability to hit for power. He’s a plus-runner, and very instinctual runner as well. So he has got a lot of the capabilities of what you would call a five-tool kid.
"
Godwin was among the most coveted football prospects in the 2015 recruiting class. He warranted a 5-star rating in 247Sports' composite rankings, signing with Georgia over SEC rivals Alabama and Auburn.
"When I first went there I just knew it was the school for me," Godwin told Jake Rowe of 247Sports on signing day in February. "We're going to do great things."
He is expected to enroll in Athens next month and compete for immediate playing time during his first training camp. However, the June Major League Baseball draft could present a final hurdle for head coach Mark Richt getting Godwin on campus.
Along with the Braves, Carvell reports up to seven MLB teams have expressed interest, including the Miami Marlins and Texas Rangers.
The Rangers currently hold baseball rights to NFL quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. The Braves previously employed Deion Sanders during his Hall of Fame football career.
Unlike college football, there can be a substantial payday awaiting teenagers who choose to sign with baseball franchises out of high school. Still, his baseball coach anticipates we'll see Godwin in a Bulldogs uniform this fall.
"I think, right now, that there’s a very, very good possibility that he’ll be at Georgia on June 1 and he’ll be there all summer long for this summer, no matter what" Hubbard said. "He’ll be there for his first football season.”
Godwin's immediate athletic future should be sorted soon, but it's become clear he's the kind of athlete who warrants serious attention across the sports spectrum.
