Mayweather Sued for Defamation

Tuesday, May 5

David K. Li of the New York Post passed along the news Tuesday:

"

Floyd Mayweather’s former gal pal filed a $20 million defamation lawsuit Tuesday against the boxing champ, after he denied beating her up — in a crime that cost him two months behind bars.

Josie Harris, mother of three children with Mayweather, claimed she’s been harmed by Mayweather’s lies to Katie Couric in an interview shown on Yahoo Global News two weeks ago.

"

Harris filed the civil complaint surrounding the 2010 incident in Los Angeles Superior Court. Li noted that Mayweather’s beating of Harris was "particularly disturbing” because it happened in front of his young son, Koraun Mayweather.

The civil suit stems from Mayweather’s interview with Katie Couric, in which he claimed Harris was high on drugs and needed to be restrained. Li passed along some of Mayweather’s quotes from that interview:

"

Did I kick, stomp and beat someone? No, that didn’t happen. I look in your face and say, “No, that didn’t happen.”

Did I restrain a woman that was on drugs? Yes, I did. So if they say that’s domestic violence, then, you know what? I’m guilty. I’m guilty of restraining someone.

"

Daniel Roberts of Deadspin chronicled Mayweather’s history of domestic violence in great detail before his September fight with Marcos Maidana.

Among other details, Roberts noted, “[Mayweather's history of misogyny] extends over a dozen years and includes at least seven separate physical assaults on five different women that resulted in arrest or citation, as well as several other instances where the police had to be summoned in response to an actual or perceived threat from Mayweather.”

Mayweather’s checkered past drew plenty of attention leading up to his fight with Manny Pacquiao, largely because of the overall hype surrounding the bout and the amount of coverage it received. There were more eyeballs paying attention to this fight and the corresponding storylines than any other recent boxing showdown, and Mayweather's domestic violence issues were widely discussed.

Mayweather won the highly anticipated clash against Pacquiao by unanimous decision Saturday to push his perfect record in the ring to 48-0.
