Most Dramatic Sports Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerMay 8, 2015

Another week, another swath of craziness around the world of sports. It has been particularly awesome recently as the NHL and NBA get deeper into their respective playoffs.

While the NHL and NBA have mostly dominated the drama corner with some crazy finishes, the MLB came on strong this week to get on this list as well as Mayweather-Pacquiao and the Kentucky Derby.

Here are the most dramatic moments in sports from the past week.

Lightning-Canadiens Double OT

1 of 8

This may seem like awhile ago now, but the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens got their second-round series off to an insane start last Friday.

The Lightning broke the scoreless tie early on in the third period, but Max Pacioretty answered the bell for Montreal later on and sent it into overtime.

No team could finish in the first overtime period despite numerous good chances, so a second extra frame was needed.

After a very questionable missed offsides call, Tampa Bay kept the pressure on Montreal goalie Carey Price and Nikita Kucherov put home a deadly wrist shot to give the Lightning the win.

Mayweather Defeats Pacquiao

2 of 8

This fight itself was actually relatively boring and uneventful, but I would be remiss not to include one of the biggest fights in history on this list.

If nothing else, the incredible amount of hype and attention in the weeks leading up to this contest is what made it so drama-filled, but Floyd Mayweather ended up doing what any boxing fan expected: grinding out a technically sound but fireworks-less victory against Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather ended up winning in a unanimous decision, cementing his legacy as the best boxer of his generation.

Two Teams Lose on Runners Hit by Batted Balls

3 of 8

Runners getting hit by a batted ball, which results in that runner being called out, happens very rarely in baseball. It's even more rare for a team to have a "walk-off" runner hit by a ball.

For it to happen twice in one day? Pretty much unheard of. Yet that's what happened on Saturday.

First, the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim were down by one run and attempting a comeback against the San Francisco Giants with runners on first and third before it happened to them on a ground ball to the right side of the infield.

Then the Arizona Diamondbacks were mounting a comeback of their own, and had what looked to be a base hit glance off the runner rounding second.

Flames Win in OT

4 of 8

The Anaheim Ducks went into Game 3 against the Calgary Flames feeling pretty good, being up 2-0 in the series.

The Ducks led after both the first and second periods, taking a 3-2 lead into the third. They seemed to get a big break when the puck looked to cross the goal line, but officials determined it did not, letting Anaheim maintain their lead late in the game.

But Johnny Gaudreau came through with a brilliant goal only 20 seconds before the final horn, sending it into overtime.

From there, Calgary got a spark and out-played Anaheim until Mikael Backlund put his first career playoff goal home from a distance to give his team the big win.

Clippers-Spurs Game 7 Classic

5 of 8

This will go down as one of the best Game 7 matchups in NBA history, and anyone who watched or even checks out highlights will instantly recognize why.

Chris Paul delivered arguably the performance of his career, scoring 27 points despite injuring his hamstring early in the game and gutting it out on one leg.

The two teams went back and forth all night, and were tied up with just a few seconds to go. Paul took the ball, drove to the basket, got forced a little outside and still ended up connecting on a ridiculous floater to put LA in the lead with just a second to go.

The Clippers held on to defeat the legendary Spurs and eliminate them after an amazing series.

Rangers Take Down Caps

6 of 8

The New York Rangers came out desperate in Game 2 against the Washington Capitals, and took a quick 2-0 lead in the first period.

But the Capitals climbed back in the second, and had it at 2-1 and then 3-2 after Alex Ovechkin scored halfway through the third period.

Henrik Lundqvist stood on his head to preserve the lead, and gave New York a huge victory in an incredibly intense game.

American Pharaoh Wins Kentucky Derby

7 of 8

American Pharaoh entered the Kentucky Derby as the solid favorite, with 3-1 odds to win the event. American Pharaoh defeated Dortmund, who had 4-1 odds to win and was undefeated previously.

The field was relatively even for much of the race, with American Pharaoh content to stay towards the middle of the pack for much of it.

But then an impressive finish gave American Pharaoh the win by one length over Firing Line, finishing three lengths ahead of Dortmund. American Pharaoh remains undefeated, with five career wins.

Lightning Last-Second Win

8 of 8

The Montreal Canadiens went into Game 3 in Tampa Bay knowing that they needed a win to get back in the series against the Lightning.

But they came out rather sluggish, and struggled to figure out how to beat Lightning goalie Ben Bishop while the Lightning jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

Brendan Gallagher finally broke through halfway into the third period, and it looked like the two teams were headed to overtime.

Yet somehow the Lightning got a few mostly uncontested passes inside the zone with a few seconds remaining, and Tyler Johnson found himself all alone to re-direct a pass into the goal as time expired to give Tampa Bay a rare buzzer-beater winner.
