Kentucky Derby 2015: Complete Race Results and Updated Triple Crown Odds
The 2015 Kentucky Derby produced one of the most exhilarating conclusions we've seen in years, as favorite American Pharoah edged out the surprising Firing Line by a length. The last time we saw a horse win by one length or less was Charismatic's victory by a neck over Menifee back in 1999.

While American Pharoah was the odds-on favorite in the days leading up to the 141st Run for the Roses, he wasn't the top horse by an overwhelming margin. The undefeated Dortmund, winner of the Santa Anita Derby, and Blue Grass Stakes winner Carpe Diem received enough betting action to warrant the strong possibility of an upset.
Making matters worse for Pharoah was his unfavorable starting location. He drew the No. 18 gate, but due to some pre-race scratches, he slid inside to start from the 16th position. While that move did slightly improve his location, he still had plenty of additional ground to make up out of the gate—especially with Dortmund starting in gate No. 8 and Carpe Diem in gate No. 3.
Due to a clean break and fantastic acceleration, Pharoah launched out of the gate and made his way toward the front of the pack, settling in to third position behind Dortmund and Firing Line. After running the majority of the race three wide to avoid traffic, jockey Victor Espinoza asked Pharoah to run following the far turn. The colt quickly advanced to the front of the pack and outlasted the quick Firing Line down the final stretch.
Here's a look back at the race in its entirety:
Both Dortmund and Firing Line are two good finishing horses, so the fact that Pharoah was able to get the best of them after running a much longer race was astonishing. His late rally is a true testament to his finishing ability and, perhaps more importantly, his stamina.
Stamina will be the colt's key element going forward, as he won't have much rest between the remaining legs of the Triple Crown. We saw California Chrome run out of gas in the Belmont last year after winning both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but will Pharoah's incredible endurance leave us with a different conclusion in 2015?
Well, according to Odds Shark, Pharoah isn't a long shot to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. Here's a look at the odds for the colt's remaining Triple Crown schedule:
| Preakness Stakes | 77-100 |
| Belmont Stakes | 6-5 |
| Triple Crown | 21-10 |
Trainer Bob Baffert knows how difficult it is to win a Triple Crown, and he remained realistic about Pharoah's chances during a press conference with The Associated Press, via the Chicago Sun Times: "If you look back at all the Triple Crown runners, they ran a lot. I think a lot has to do with who you are running against and how tough it is. This was such a tough Derby."
It was a tough Derby, indeed. In fact, Pharoah hadn't been challenged in that manner since losing his maiden special weight back in August 2014. Will his added exertion during the Kentucky Derby lead to his downfall, or will his remarkable stamina shine bright yet again?
Regardless of the ultimate answer to that question, American Pharoah has already provided horse racing enthusiasts with yet another year of Triple Crown drama, excitement and intrigue.
