Matt JonesMay 4, 2015

Chennai Super Kings were able to defend a meagre total of 148 for nine to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday, moving back to the summit of the Indian Premier League in the process.

Bangalore were superb in restricting their opponents’ star-studded batting lineup during their time at the crease, with Mitchell Starc shining with the ball. But their own clutch of quality batsmen let them down, as they crumbled under the pressure of the chase and finished up 24 runs short.

The second game of the day saw Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 35 runs in another game in which ball dominated bat.

Kolkata Coast to Victory over Hyderabad

3 of 4

Kolkata Knight Riders (167/7) beat Hyderabad Sunrisers (132/9) by 35 runs

Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a fine start in this match, with the opening batting pair of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa both playing with poise against a fierce Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling attack.

Throughout this competition, they’ve functioned well as a duo, and their first-wicket stand of 57 from 38 balls laid some solid foundations for batsmen to come. However, once Gambhir did depart in the seventh over for 31, the Knight Riders’ effort lost a little bit of momentum.

Manish Pandey came out to the crease and played in a similar style to the two openers, but Kolkata were crying out for some fireworks at this point. Uthappa was unable to up the ante as he departed for 30, while Pandey also failed to make the most of his own start, as he was run out for 33.

Kolkata do have strength in depth, however, with Andre Russell, Ryan ten Doeschate and Yusuf Pathan backing up the top three. Credit to the Hyderabad bowlers though, who managed to take the wicket of the former two, but they were unable to get a grip on the latter; his unbeaten 30 from 19 balls provided the Knight Riders with the late momentum they so desperately craved.

As such, they eventually finished up on 167 for seven, and while it represented a decent score, after such a good start, it should have been more.

The Kolkata bowlers will have been acutely aware of the fragility within this Hyderabad batting lineup, though. Indeed, from the off they got stuck into the openers, with Umesh Yada taking the critical wicket of the in-form David Warner inside the first over for just four.

Given just how important the Aussie has been for the Sunrisers in this tournament so far, the fears were that this early loss represented a critical blow to Hyderabad’s chances. Sadly for the team in orange and black, things got even worse as Naman Ojha was dismissed with the last ball of the first over, leaving them in massive trouble on six runs for two wickets.

Shikhar Dhawan was unable to prompt a rebuilding job as he fell for 15 inside five overs, while neither Eoin Morgan (5) or Hanuma Vihari (6) were able to get into double figures.

The game quickly ran away from Hyderabad, despite the best efforts of Moises Henriques, who offered some sole resistance with a knock of 41. In the end, they finished up on 132 for nine, 32 runs short of Kolkata's haul.

After starting the tournament well with three wins from four, Kolkata came into this match having triumphed in just one of their last five. As such, this was a hugely important victory for Gambhir’s men as they bid to retain the championship they worked scrupulously to win last year.

Aside from the superb bowling of Yadav—who finished with figures of 2 for 34 from his allotted four overs—the most encouraging facet of this performance for Kolkata was the strength in batting depth. While none of the players who got into the 30s went on to make massive scores, there are so many players in this lineup with the temperament to make crucial contributions at vital moments.

Chennai Recover to Defeat Bangalore

4 of 4

Chennai Super Kings (148/9) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (124) by 24 runs

The tone for this low-scoring game was set from the opening over, as the superb Mitchell Starc had Dwayne Smith in all kinds of trouble.

Having been unable to score off the first five ferocious deliveries, Smith was beaten by a cracking sixth ball from the Aussie left-armer. Starc had him absolutely bamboozled with his superb fast bowling, and one of Chennai’s most dangerous players was back in the pavilion for a duck early on.

The key when playing against a team like Chennai is to keep pressure on, though. They have so many brilliant players, and in this format, all it takes is a couple of overs of inspiration to swing the game one way or the other. To Bangalore’s credit, they continued to take wickets at regular intervals, with Brendon McCullum (20), Faf du Plessis (24) and MS Dhoni (29) all failing to capitalise on starts.

Suresh Raina was able to offer some resistance, as he played well for his 54. But Chennai’s lower order was blown away by Starc in the latter stages, leaving the Aussie with impressive figures of three for 24 from his four overs and Chennai with a meagre total of 148 for nine to defend with the ball.

For Bangalore, this should have been a relatively straightforward chase. But as was the case in their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders last time out, the illustrious names at the top of the batting order failed to show their proper potential.

With no Chris Gayle in the squad, Nic Maddinson was tasked with opening the batting. But it was a responsibility that was clearly too much for the Aussie, as he fell for a rank four in the third over. Granted, his opening partner Virat Kohli played pretty well in this innings, but finding partners at the crease was tough to come by for the India star.

AB de Villiers lost his wicket cheaply after a brisk 21, before disaster struck not long after. Mandeep Singh, who played magnificently to win the game for Bangalore against Kolkata, was run out without even facing a ball.

Suddenly, the momentum was in the favour of Chennai, and when Ashish Nehra took the wickets of Dinesh Karthik (23) and Sarfaraz Khan (8) either side of Kohli being run out for 48, Bangalore’s chances were all but gone.

Nehra’s control ensured the Bangalore lower order were unable to gather any momentum, and the Chennai star finished up with excellent figures of three for 19. Eventually, the Royal Challengers will have been hugely disappointed to be bowled out for 124 and to come up 24 runs short of what was a very gettable score.

This was a match in which it was anticipated that the batsmen would steal the spotlight, but the quality of bowling and fielding on display from both sides was hugely entertaining.

Starc will be majorly disappointed that his team were unable to capitalise after the Bangalore players bowled so superbly. But credit must go to his opposite number Nehra, who led the Chennai attack with comparable poise and purpose.

However, if either side is going to go on and win this competition, it’s absolutely imperative their batting stars rediscover their form at the earliest possible opportunity.
