IPL 2015: Highest Run-Scorers, Best Bowling Figures, T20 Averages and More
Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals were the victors on a super Sunday of India Premier League cricket.
The Indians won by 23 runs against rock-bottom Kings XI Punjab. Mumbai posted a competitive score of 172 for three from their 20 overs, but the perennial batting problems that have hampered this Punjab side returned, as they could only muster 149 for seven in response.
Rajasthan’s win over Delhi Daredevils later in the day followed a similar pattern, although the eventual victors posted a marvellous haul of 189 for two from their batting effort. Early wickets meant Delhi rarely looked in with a chance of chasing it down, and they lost by 14 runs in the end.
Here’s how this result affects various individual classifications and a closer examination of some of the day’s standout performers.

Standout Performers

Lendl Simmons, Parthiv Patel Shine for Mumbai
As far as opening partnerships go, it doesn’t get much better than this one from Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel. The Mumbai Indians pair put on 111 runs for the first wicket, giving their team-mates an exceptional platform to build on.
Patel was definitely the more aggressive of the duo. He made 59 from just 36 balls during his time out in the middle, with some sumptuous slashes to the boundary shifting the pressure onto an extremely fragile Kings XI team.
At the other end, Simmons played with a lot more composure. But when Patel did eventually get out, the West Indies star looked to take the fight to Punjab alongside Rohit Sharma. Eventually he was dismissed for a hard-earned 71 from just 56 balls.
After sitting pretty on 111 for one in the 13th over, Mumbai should have posted well in excess of 172. But encouragingly for this improving team, the opening partnership between the aforementioned duo really seems to be flourishing as they bid to launch a late charge for the playoffs.
Ajinkya Rahane Shows His Quality
After failing to win any of their previous five matches, Rajasthan Royals were in desperate need of a talismanic figure to stand up and be counted on in this match. Step forward Ajinkya Rahane, who played a superb innings that helped his team get back to winning ways.
The India international carried his bat through the entire innings here, finishing up unbeaten with 91 from just 54 balls. Rahane’s knock contained nine fours and three towering sixes; ultimately, it was an effort upon which Rajasthan’s total of 189 was founded and their eventual victory over Delhi Daredevils.
Rajasthan were the best team in this competition in the early weeks, and the glittering form of Rahane had a lot to do with that. But like the team, the batsman’s form has suffered a little dip as of late, and the Royals have struggled to cope without his serene influence.
But ominously for the rest of the sides in this tournament, Rahane looked in brilliant touch once again here. Provided he can continue to set the tempo for his team with his insouciant playing style, Rajasthan will be a big danger for the remainder of the campaign and in the playoffs come the season’s climax.
