Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Results: Stats That Show Money Was the Clear Winner

Gianni VerschuerenMay 3, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s unanimous-decision win over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday had many in Pac-Man's native Philippines questioning the results in the scorecards, but the stats back up the judge's decision to announce Money as the clear winner of the bout.

As shared by Newsweek, fans of Pacquiao cried foul when all three judges gave the undefeated pound-for-pound king a comfortable win on the cards:

ESPN's David Kull shared the cards in question, which painted the fight as a one-sided affair:

Mayweather dominated the early rounds before Pacquiao became the aggressor in the middle of the fight, but as the bout wore down, Money once again took over and cruised to what most agreed was a clear win.

Most, but certainly not all, including Pacquiao himself, told reporters after the fight they believed Pac-Man should have been ahead on points:

Mayweather, in typical fashion, was cautious and refused to engage Pacquiao whenever the latter pressed the action. He exploited his advantage in reach and found plenty of success with his jab and right-hand lead, keeping the fight in the centre of the ring and Pacquiao at a safe distance.

The Filipino slugger is known as a volume puncher, and as shared by ESPN Stats & Info, it became clear early his punch rate was drastically lower than it usually is:

In the aftermath of the bout, Pacquiao's camp brought up a shoulder injury that held the 36-year-old back in training and during the bout, per BBC Sport. It may have affected his power and left him reluctant to throw a lot of combinations, but there were other signs that indicated Mayweather simply outclassed his opponent.

Money's jab was working throughout the fight, and he used it well to keep Pacquiao at a distance and himself away from the ropes. In contrast, Pac-Man was throwing his own jab far less than he usually does, per CompuBox:

When Pacquiao fired his jab, he usually only connected once. Mayweather's footwork ensured the follow-up punches hit nothing but air, as the American glided around the ring and away from danger.

Even when the two traded punches, Mayweather's advantage in reach showed. His right-hand lead found the target early and often, and when Pacquiao tried to press the action by moving inside, he often ran into short counterpunches as well.

Pac-Man has never been a prolific boxer when going to the body, which was just about the only area Mayweather left somewhat exposed at times. By continuing to go for the head, he made it too easy for Mayweather to out-punch him, something that rarely happens.

This particular stat from ESPN Stats & Info is something few fans and pundits would have predicted before the fight:

Mayweather's accuracy was on full display, but his volume of punches compared to Pac-Man's likely won him the fight. Incredibly enough, he actually threw more punches than his opponent and connected with a far higher percentage, per CompuBox (h/t MailOnline Sport):

Pacquiao looked at his best in the fourth and sixth round, when he was able to push the action and drive Mayweather into the ropes. He probably won those two rounds on most cards, but you won't find too many people who gave him more than four rounds in total.

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson kept his assessment of the fight simple:

Mayweather looked the better fighter early and was never really troubled. Pac-Man showed his age on Saturday, whereas Money fought perhaps his best fight in years.

He has no equal in the welterweight division, and until the day he retires, he won't be knocked off the pound-for-pound rankings. If this fight was supposed to decide which of the two was the best fighter of his generation, the answer was pretty resounding.
