Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Rematch Is Unnecessary Following First Fight Results

Alex BallentineMay 3, 2015

Once upon a time, Manny Pacquiao may have been the man to give Floyd Mayweather's unbeaten record a run for its money. As evidenced by Mayweather's decision victory on Saturday, that time has come and gone.

Mayweather's movement, timing and accuracy proved to be too much for the 36-year-old Pacquiao. While Pac-Man was able to track down Money and land flurries on occasion, those moments were few and far between.

While some may believe that Pacquiao's aggressiveness should have won him more rounds, the punch stats truly tell the story. Compubox tweeted out a photo of the final tally:

For those tuning into a Mayweather fight for the first time, this was most likely a disappointment. Money's style doesn't resemble Rocky movies, Rock'em Sock'em Robots or a collision of any kind. His game is predicated on reaction and timing. It's a style that has to be watched in slow motion to even truly appreciate as he makes opponents miss, counters himself and then moves out of the way in the blink of an eye.

Once upon a time, Pacquiao had the quickness and power to complicate things. If this fight had taken place in 2010, things could have been different. Five years ago Pacquiao was coming off knockout wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto.

Coming into this fight, Pac-Man's last offerings were decision wins over the likes of Brandon Rios, Timothy Bradley and Chris Algieri.

But that's what comes with age. The dwindling of skills. Yes, Mayweather is two years older than Pacquiao, but he's fought in 17 fewer fights and takes minimal damage thanks to his defense.

Injuries also come with age. As SportsCenter noted, Pacquiao suffered a shoulder injury in training that could have altered his game plan heading into the fight:

There's an argument to be made that the injury is the beginning of a rematch. With Pacquiao hypothetically hampered in this bout, there's still some remaining intrigue as to what a healthy Pac-Man could do against Mayweather.

But fans only have a limited number of appearances from Money left. The 38-year-old said post-fight that he intends to fight one more time in September and then call it quits at a perfect 49-0, per SportsCenter:

So the question is, if fans are only getting one more chance to either see him get dethroned or watch him continue his streak (depending on where your allegiances lie), is Pacquiao really the most intriguing opponent possible?

The answer to that question after watching their first fight should be no. Instead, an opponent like Amir Khan would be a more interesting battle to watch Mayweather leave the sport with.

King Khan has pined for a fight against either Mayweather or Pacquiao for years. Unfortunately for him, the timing has never matched up. Back-to-back losses in 2011 and 2012 sunk his stock, while Mayweather and Pacquiao opted for other opponents.

Now there's a glimmer of hope for him. BBC reports that a fight pitting Money against the British boxer is on Mayweather's radar:

If that fight comes to fruition, Khan won't be the most skilled boxer Mayweather has faced in his career. There's a reason that Khan hasn't received his big-money fight yet, he's suffered knockout losses against the likes of Danny Garcia and Breidis Prescott in his 30-3 career thus far.

However, what Khan has going for him is an aggressive style that is marked by speed and combinations. Should he get his chance against Mayweather, we're going to see a fighter near his physical peak (28 years old) looking to put Mayweather in danger for however long he lasts in the ring with the pound-for-pound kingpin.

Fans will see a fighter set on making his legacy by stalking down Mayweather and giving him the first loss of his career.

Isn't that what everyone wanted from Mayweather-Pacquiao?
