Floyd Mayweather Vows to Relinquish Title Belts After Win Over Manny Pacquiao

Rory MarsdenMay 2, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr. insisted he will relinquish all of his title belts following his unanimous-decision victory over Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The 38-year-old American took his unbeaten record to 48-0 with an impressive defeat of the Filipino at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

In the process he became the unified WBC, WBA and WBO welterweight champion. However, he has now indicated he will give up his titles on Monday, per ESPN's Robert Flores:

BBC Sport's Dan Roan provided further explanation from Mayweather on his decision:

In the ring immediately following Saturday's much-anticipated bout, Mayweather said he would fight just one more time before his retirement, per Sports Illustrated: "My last fight is in September, then it's time for me to hang it up."

He hinted at how he wanted to finish his career, indicating that his final fight would not be a title fight, per sports broadcaster Brian Custer:

Mayweather's defeat of Pacquiao was very convincing and effectively secured his reputation as the greatest boxer of the current era.

As NBC's Chris Mannix notes, the relinquishing of his titles will have no bearing on Mayweather's legacy, and may well be a good thing for boxing:

It will be intriguing to see what Money's next move is, with a Pacquiao rematch hugely unlikely given the nature of the victory, per boxing analyst Corey Erdman on Bleacher Report:

There is little doubting Mayweather's quality, and it is difficult to see who could truly challenge him in the ring.

He will most likely be victorious in his final career fight and walk away from the sport with an undefeated record.
