American Pharoah won the 10-furlong race in 2:03.02 in front of a record crowd of 170,513. The colt is the first horse to win from Gate 17.
As Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde pointed out, the race was hard fought.
The win was jockey Victor Espinoza's third triumph at the Derby, having won with California Chrome last year and War Emblem in 2002.

As Jay Privman, the national correspondent for the Daily Racing Form points out, only three jockeys have won the Derby more times than the Mexican.
At 16-1, Firing Line was not one of the immediate favourites, but starting from Gate 10—historically the most successful gate—and ridden by three-time Derby winner Gary Stevens, he ran a marvelous race.
In the final corner, Firing Line, Dortmund and American Pharoah were side by side. Firing Line pushed ahead, only to be reined in at the close by American Pharoah.

Next up in the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes on May 16.
With all three horses in such fine form, American Pharoah, Firing Line and Dortmund will likely be strong contenders in Baltimore.
Bob Baffert, who trained both American Pharoah and Dortmund, is eagerly anticipating the Preakness Stakes. Per Gary Mihoces of USA Today, he said: "We're looking forward to it. The next one, we call in the 'fun one.' You know we're coming off a Derby high, going in there to Baltimore, and the Preakness is one of my favorite races.''

California Chrome followed up his win in the Kentucky Derby last year with a win at the Preakness, before finishing third in the Belmont Stakes after his foot was stepped on coming out of the gate.
Having lived up to the hype in Kentucky, American Pharoah could be in line to be the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.
The likes of Dortmund and Firing Line won't make it easy for him, but American Pharoah seems destined for greatness.
