Kentucky Derby 2015: Final Results, Standings, Payouts and Replay Highlights
American Pharoah justified his favorite status and ran away with the 2015 Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon in exhilarating fashion, emerging from a loaded field of favorites down the stretch.
Firing Line galloped to a close second-place finish after pushing the winner by finishing within a length, while fellow Bob Baffert favorite Dortmund faded late to take third place. But American Pharoah stole the show with a late surge and claimed victory over the 141st Run for the Roses.
Bleacher Report captured a shot of just how close Firing Line came:
American Pharoah didn't lead for the vast majority of the race, but his place among the contenders never wavered. He comfortably took the outside with Dortmund and Firing Line battling on the inside, gaining traction coming around the turn before holding off Firing Line down a heated stretch.
Take a look at how the field finished from top to bottom, as well as all of the payout information and replay highlights.

Coming into Saturday's race, no horse had ever won the crown jewel at Churchill Downs from the No. 17 post position. American Pharoah also entered with the reputation that he had never truly been tested before, instead winning all of his races somewhat comfortably.
The 3-1 favorite, according to Odds Shark, had his hands full early on, but jockey Victor Espinoza positioned the horse favorably and never fell out of the top five. Regardless, Dortmund pulled out in front by a couple of lengths following the first half of the race and was cruising from the front.
Firing Line and Frosted stayed hot on Dortmund's tail, but the presence of American Pharoah near the outside always remained. As the front of the pack rounded the turn, American Pharoah began gaining steam to catch up to the front duo.
Stride by stride, American Pharoah quickly galloped into the lead while the favorites started coming down the stretch. At the same time, Dortmund began falling back behind American Pharoah and Firing Line—who entered a dead heat down the final two furlongs.
But Espinoza let his horse run, as The Courier-Journal's Kentucky Derby Twitter noted, and the rest is history:
The eventual winner seemed to go awfully wide as they came around the turn and down the stretch, which could have put Espinoza into a tough spot. But American Pharoah's speed continued to the finish.
Regardless, Frank Angst of The Blood-Horse thought he could have won by an extra length or two had he stayed straight:
Favorites in recent history haven't fared too well at the Kentucky Derby, but the weight of being the favorite hasn't been crushing for the last couple of winners. American Pharoah joined California Chrome among favorites to claim victory in the last three years, as ESPN Stats and Info noted:
While American Pharoah left no doubt of his ability to take down the best in Grade 1 horse-racing Saturday at Churchill Downs, he wasn't the only horse to impress on the day. One performance not to be overlooked in the Baffert madness is Firing Line, who came a length away from spoiling the party entirely.
For a moment in the final seconds of the race, it looked like Firing Line would do just that. Even though American Pharoah's class came through, Firing Line should not be disappointed, as Chris Fallica noted:
But unfortunately for Firing Line and his spectacular race, it will read as mere footnotes to a race that will go down in history as American Pharoah's.
All signs entering the Derby pointed toward American Pharoah running wild this spring and summer during the Triple Crown circuit, with the only worry being whether he could overcome a plethora of favorites by coming from behind. Well, he just beat virtually all of them in that exact fashion.
Along with the trainer, owners and bettors, American Pharoah's jockey will be raking in some winnings as well, as Robert Raiola noted:
Up next for American Pharoah are two races that have proven impossible for any Kentucky Derby to sweep in the last 40-plus years. But as action gears up for the Preakness Stakes in a few short weeks, there won't be any shortage of buzz on his chances to accomplish the feat.
