2015 Kentucky Derby Betting Picks: Materiality, Frosted Best Odds Value
We have seen the early money come in on the Bob Baffert duo of American Pharoah and Dortmund for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby, but there are others in the field that offer good betting value for Saturday.
In the latest odds to win the Kentucky Derby at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark, American Pharoah is at odds of 13-5 while the undefeated Dortmund is at odds of 15-4.
However, with just six betting favorites winning the Run for the Roses dating back three decades, let’s look for the best odds value with a couple of longshots.
Materiality is an undefeated colt that will be sent out by the barn of Todd Pletcher. The colt won the Florida Derby (G1) in his last start and owns the top Beyer Speed Figure to date in a Kentucky Derby prep of 110.
With just three starts under his belt and no starts as a juvenile last year, he is the most inexperienced runner in the Kentucky Derby field. The colt was sired by Afleet Alex, who won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 2005.
His odds of 14-1 make him worth a good look to pull off the upset and give Pletcher his second Kentucky Derby winner. The trainer’s lone win with 40 starters came with Super Saver in 2010.
Frosted is currently at betting odds of 12-1 at the online sportsbooks and took some early betting action on Friday at Churchill Downs, closing at 9-1 from his 15-1 morning line.
The colt is coming off his career best outing, a victory in the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct. The colt lost his first three stakes tries, fading to finish fourth in the Fountain of Youth (G2) in his previous start before the Wood.
The colt is in good hands with former D. Wayne Lukas assistant Kiaran McLaughlin, who nearly pulled off the biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history when he saddled Closing Argument to a runner-up finish in 2005 at betting odds of 71-1.
