Kentucky Derby 2015: International Star Scratched from 141st Edition on Race Day
International Star, who accumulated more points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby than any other horse, has been scratched from the 141st running of the storied race.
Churchill Downs PR confirmed the horse's removal from the field Saturday, while Kent Spencer of WHAS11 revealed why:
The Lexington Herald-Leader (through its horse racing-focused Twitter account) provided a synopsis of Mike Maker and Ken Ramsey discussing the situation and International Star's future:
John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Leader highlighted the disappointment for the connections:
He also provided an update on how the field would assume its post positions:
International Star becomes the third scratch since the draw Wednesday.
Stanford was removed, and Frammento replaced him. El Kabeir was also taken out of the race, but since the two most recent withdrawals came after the Friday 9 a.m. ET deadline, Tale of Verve was not added to the field.
This is the most notable loss of the trio. International Star won each of his last three races, including the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby. He had been a reasonable long-shot selection with 25-1 odds, according to Odds Shark.
A field of 18 is now scheduled to break from the Churchill Downs gate in the first leg of the Triple Crown Saturday afternoon.
