Brilliant Warner Steers Sunrisers to Victory over Chennai
3 of 4
Hyderabad Sunrisers (192/7) beat Chennai Super Kings (170/6) by 22 runs
After being put into bat by Chennai Super Kings, the pressure was on the Hyderabad Sunrisers to make some swift early runs. But in David Warner, the hosts had the perfect man for the job.
He was superb at the top of the order, setting the tone magnificently with his aggressive stroke-play. The Aussie's innings of 68 from just 21 balls was simply sensational and although he departed in the ninth over, at 86 for one, the platform was in place for a mammoth total.
As we can see here courtesy of ESPNcricinfo, it was quite a knock from the opener:
"David Warner's blitz is over in Hyderabad http://t.co/TMKnRoHmKd #SRHvCSK #IPL2015 pic.twitter.com/kU3klrQyxX
— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) May 2, 2015"
The challenge for Hyderabad—as it has been throughout this tournament—was to appropriately capitalise on the foundations put in place by their skipper. On this occasion they did a much better job than they have previously.
Shikhar Dhawan was the man who looked to play responsibly throughout, making 37 from 32 balls, while 32 from Eoin Morgan and a brisk 20 from Naman Ojha kept the rate decent. However, some timely wickets from Chennai late on prevented a score in excess of 200, with the Sunrisers eventually finishing up 192 for seven from their 20 overs.
As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, there would have been mixed feeling for Hyderabad at the conclusion of their batting effort:
"Top-heavy & probably under-par from #SRH; but they are forced into that by personnel. They've got bowlers to defend this. #IPL #SRHvCSK #CSK
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 2, 2015"
They showcased their bowling credentials early on too, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar snaffling the wicket of the eminently dangerous Brendon McCullum. In truth, it was a wicket which set the tone for the entirety of the Chennai innings, as they lost vital batsmen at important times in the chase.
Dwayne Smith (21), Suresh Raina (23), Faf du Plessis (33) and MS Dhoni (20) all got starts during their time at the crease, but none of these star batsmen were able to go on and make the kind of Warner-esque knock required to chase down a big total like this.
However, credit must go to the Hyderabad bowlers too. As we can see here courtesy of HoldingWilleyCricket, they were producing some brilliant deliveries at critical moments in the match:
"Game changer moment! Dhoni's wicket! #SRHvCSK #IPL http://t.co/iqFA6UNAUD
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) May 2, 2015"
With so many quality players back in the dugout and the rate pushing past 12 runs per over, the chase quickly got away from Chennai. Eventually, they fell 22 runs short in their pursuit, leaving a colourful Hyderabad home support to celebrate wildly after the final ball.
This Sunrisers team is one that has clear flaws and is very much reliant on the quality of Warner. But if the captain can continue to play with such swagger and the team’s bowlers can continue to operate as well as they have been doing, this Hyderabad side can win plenty of matches.
There was no clearer illustration of that fact than here, as they coasted to a win over the very best team in the competition. Chennai have been brilliant so far, but with so many classy operators with the bat in their team, they’ll be the first to admit that Warner’s brilliance was the difference between the two on the day.
Bangalore Edge Kolkata in Rain-Affected Game
4 of 4
Royal Challengers Bangalore (115/3) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (111/4) by seven wickets (10-over match)
The dreary weather conditions looked as though they were going to prevent this game from going ahead at all for a while. However, while the start was delayed, eventually the covers came off, and we were treated to an engrossing match.
With just 60 balls to face each, Kolkata, who were put into bat by Rajasthan, came out swinging from the off. But neither Gautam Gambhir (12) or Robin Uthappa (23) really got going during their time at the crease. Thankfully for the Knight Riders, Andre Russell did.
Promoted to No. 3 in the batting order, the West Indies star smashed a magnificent 45 off just 17 balls. His innings included five fours, three sixes, and while he was dismissed in the ninth over, Russell’s innings was vital in Kolkata posting a decent total of 111 for four.
Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo had high praise for the Kolkata all-rounder:
"That's a decent effort from #KKR. Andre Russell is the most exciting player in the world right now. #IPL #RCBvKKR #RCB
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 2, 2015"
Bangalore’s response got going pretty quickly, though. With Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli at the top of the order, runs were always going to flow if either of the duo got going; that certainly proved to be the case with the former, who bludgeoned 21 from just nine balls before being dismissed.
However, when the dangerous AB de Villiers was out for just two, the Royal Challengers started to lose some momentum. Kohli remained in situ and played well for his 34, but the rate was creeping up unforgivingly as he departed in the eighth over.
At this juncture, Bangalore needed a special knock, and Mandeep Singh stepped up to the plate with style. He struck a staggering 45 from 18 balls, including two monstrous sixes in the last over to get his team over the line.
As noted by AltCricket, the 23-year-old really rose to the occasion as others around him toiled:
"What a knock by Mandeep Singh! Out-batted Gayle, ABdV and Kohli with a match-winning 45 off 18 balls. #IPL
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) May 2, 2015"
After a tough start to the season, Bangalore have won three of their last four matches, with the other game being a non-result after a washout against Rajasthan Royals.
There were fears that the balance in this team was skewed with so many massive names, and while this fixture was a bit of a slogfest, it keeps their positive momentum going with some tough challenges on the horizon.
