Another absorbing day in the Indian Premier League saw Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad secure vital victories.
Bangalore came out on top against Kolkata Knight Riders in a fixture that was reduced to 10 overs per side after some poor weather conditions. The Royal Challengers triumphed by seven wickets with two balls to spare, thanks in the main to Mandeep Singh, who played a magnificent innings.

Standout Performers

Mandeep Singh’s Late Heroics Steer Bangalore to Victory
With a massive run rate to tackle and men like AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle already back in the dugout, things were looking bleak for Bangalore Royal Challengers in their rain-reduced clash with Kolkata Knight Riders.
But with the game slipping away for the Royal Challengers, Mandeep Singh thrust them back into contention and to eventual victory with a gem of a knock. He hit 45 from 18 balls while at the crease, including two sixes in the final over to help Bangalore to a seven-wicket win.
As noted by Alt Cricket, the 23-year-old stepped up to the plate when other top-calibre players crumbled around him:
"What a knock by Mandeep Singh! Out-batted Gayle, ABdV and Kohli with a match-winning 45 off 18 balls. #IPL
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) May 2, 2015"
The balance of power and poise Mandeep showcased out in the middle was superb. For skipper Kohli, it’s comforting to know that on the rare occasions all of his big hitters do fail to make a substantial score, with some quality young players lower down the order there is plenty of strength in depth within their batting lineup.
David Warner Destroys Chennai Bowling Attack
Hyderabad Sunrisers are extremely reliant on their captain, perhaps more so than any of the eight teams battling it out in this illustrious tournament. But it’s a responsibility that David Warner seems to relish, as was evident in Hyderabad’s superb win over the Chennai Super Kings.
On the day, the aggressive Aussie batsman was the big difference between the two teams. After being put into bat after losing the toss, Warner was outstanding in building momentum for his side and smashed 61 from just 28 balls.
As noted by Broken Cricket, it was an innings that was a vital catalyst in the context of the match:
"David Warner Set the fire initially for SRH Since that no looking back for them Its much needed win for SRH.. #SRHvsCSK
— Broken Cricket (@BrokenCricket) May 2, 2015"
Warner’s knock moved him past Ajinkya Rahane to the summit of the top run-scorers standings in the IPL. There are few who would disagree with the notion that he’s the most entertaining player in the tournament at this juncture—certainly none of those in attendance to see him smash 11 fours and a six in the aforementioned innings.
Warner is evolving into a talismanic figure for this team. The Sunrisers have a clutch of quality bowling options, but aside from the skipper and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan, the depth in batting doesn’t quite match up to some other sides in the competition.
As such, Warner’s going to need to preserve these stratospheric performance levels if Hyderabad are going to make it into the playoffs.
