Jeremiah Poutasi to Tennessee Titans: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Daniel BarnesMay 1, 2015

This is a little bit of a head-scratcher. Jeremiah Poutasi played tackle at Utah, and the Tennessee Titans have a big need at right tackle. However, most analysts have projected Poutasi to be a guard at the next level, and the Titans have a lesser need at guard.

Poutasi has the right size at 6'5", 335 pounds to play right tackle or guard in the NFL, but the concern with him is whether he can play fast enough at tackle.

He also showed tremendous improvement from 2013 to 2014, especially in pass protection, so there's a chance that he's just now tapping into his potential.

I feel like the Titans tabbed him because they aren't 100 percent certain what position he'll be playing for them. He could be fighting against Byron Bell for the starting right tackle spot, which was one of the Titans' most vulnerable areas in 2014.

Alternatively, the Titans could have faith in Bell and want Poutasi to come in for the disappointing Andy Levitre as a cost-cutting measure.

Most likely, the Titans like his chances to play whichever spot in which they feel more vulnerable at the start of the season and expect him to compete for either spot.

However, I think the Titans' need at right tackle is much more severe than their need at guard, and there were better pure tackle prospects available if that's the direction that the Titans wanted to go.

You could probably say the same about guard as well, actually.  Either way, this is a pick I don't really get. T.J. Clemmings would have been a much better pick, if the Titans are even thinking about a right tackle.

It's not the worst pick, because it fits needs, but I can't help but think that it's a bit of a reach here.
