Tevin Coleman to Atlanta Falcons: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Scott CarasikMay 1, 2015

The Atlanta Falcons just drafted their franchise running back with the selection of Tevin Coleman at the top of the third round. Coleman is a great fit for the Falcons' new scheme under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. He's a true zone-blocking back who should gain a ton of yards in Atlanta.

The Falcons needed someone to team with Devonta Freeman within the new scheme and share carries in a running back-by-committee situation until one of them stepped up and took the starting job. Coleman was a second-round value who slipped to the third for Atlanta.

Atlanta switching to a zone-blocking scheme gave the team a ton of promise for what Freeman could do. However, there was still a need to get someone to complement Freeman due to the fact that no NFL team really runs with a single running back offense anymore unless that back is transcendent.

Coleman may not be that transcendent back, but he's a perfect complement to Freeman within the scheme. Coleman at times would get a lot of short or zero runs in college and then follow it with a huge gain of 75 yards. His best plays were the ones in which he was asked to run the wide-zone stretch plays.

And because of this, his hit-or-miss style had more to do with the Indiana offensive line being terrible than anything else. The Falcons should have a better offensive line than what he's used to and should be able to open the holes needed for him to succeed as a tailback.

The questions in his game come from his receiving ability and pass-blocking abilities. He does run solid routes, but he'll drop the ball or just not track it well in the air to catch it. And as a blocker, he has no technique but all of the willingness. Once he cleans up these issues, he could be a top back in the league.

Off the Field

There aren't any off-field questions relating to Coleman's character. In fact, he's known as a great character player who was a team captain for the Hoosiers during his college career. The question that comes from Coleman off the field is injury concerns related to a broken toe.

His injury prevented him from working out at the combine, but he should be able to get healthy before the season starts. Coleman also had an ankle injury that held him out of three games during his sophomore season that didn't seem to bother him during his senior year.

Why Tevin Coleman instead of Duke Johnson or Sammie Coates?

When looking into ideal fits for the zone-blocking scheme, Duke Johnson and Coleman both come up as perfect fits for the scheme. The reason why Coleman goes before Johnson is because he just has better field vision and did more with a worse offensive line in college.

And while Coates would have been a great selection due to his similarities to Julio Jones physically, he's still raw as a receiving talent who needs work on his routes. Not to mention, running back is just a bigger need for the Falcons than wide receiver is.

The value here for Coleman just couldn't be beat either. He was a top-of-the-second-round talent who fell to the top of the third. Atlanta now has a great running back rotation for its running game between Coleman, Freeman and Anton Smith.
