Kentucky Derby 2015: Dortmund, Carpe Diem, Materiality Betting Odds
While American Pharoah is getting the early betting action on Friday at Churchill Downs, his stablemate and several other contenders are taking some betting action as well for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby.
Americans Pharoah’s stablemate Dortmund is the second choice in the betting for the Kentucky Derby. The undefeated colt trained by Bob Baffert is listed at odds of 15-to-4 at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark, and on track the colt is currently listed at betting odds of 5-to-1, with $15,990 wagered on him to win out of $119,888 in advance betting.
Dortmund is perfect in his six career starts and won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in his last outing. Jockey Martin Garcia will ride, and they will break from the No. 8 post.
The colt made three starts last year as a juvenile, capped off by winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity by a hard-fought head over Firing Line.
The two were separated by just a head again in the Grade 3 Robert. B. Lewis. Firing Line is currently at betting odds of 12-to-1 in early Kentucky Derby wagering.
Carpe Diem, with jockey John Velazquez aboard, is currently listed at betting odds of 8-to-1 at the sportsbooks. The colt is trained by Todd Pletcher, one of three contenders the seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer will saddle.
The winner of the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby and Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes this year, he appears to have the best chance of helping Pletcher improve on his 1 of 40 mark with his Derby starters.
The colt has won four of his five career starts, the lone loss a second to Texas Red in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last fall at Santa Anita.
Pletcher will saddle Materiality, who is undefeated in three career starts. The son of Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Afleet Alex won the Grade 1 Florida Derby in his last outing. The colt is currently listed at betting odds of 16-to-1 at the sportsbooks.
Dortmund may have the best shot of knocking off the favorite. Carpe Diem has not run fast enough, and Materiality would be the first Kentucky Derby winner since 1882 that did not race as a juvenile if he is draped with roses.
