Mumbai Hold off Rajasthan Charge
3 of 4
Mumbai Indians (187-5) beat Rajasthan Royals (179-7) by eight runs
There was an enamouring intent about the way in which the Mumbai Indians, put into bat by the Rajasthan Royals, went about their business in the opening stages of their innings.
With Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel at the top of the order they were aggressive from the off, laying a solid platform of 43 for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed for 23. From that point on, with Unmukt Chand joining the opener at the crease, things slowed down a little, before Simmons fell for 38 looking to up the ante.
Chand followed him the next over, but as noted by HoldingWilleyCricket, with Rohit Sharma at the crease alongside Ambati Rayudu and with wickets to come, there was no need to panic:
"100 up for #MI. Just under 7 overs for them to set a good score. Should be enough if Rohit and Pollard stay awhile. #MIvRR
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) May 1, 2015"
The latter certainly added credence to that assessment, as he preceded to smash the Rajasthan bowlers to all corners. Sharma dug in at the other end to offer Rayudu appropriate insurance and the India star responded with distinction, hammering an unbeaten 53 off just 27 balls.
As noted by India cricketer Mohammad Kaif, it was a super innings that came at an ideal time:
"Well played #rayudu , @mipaltan couldn't have expected better timing for this knock , 187 is good score if u have bowlers like malinga #ipl
— Mohammad Kaif (@KaifSays) May 1, 2015"
Sharma departed for a determined 27 during those fireworks and a late flourish of 24 from 14 from Kieron Pollard pushed Mumbai to an excellent eventual total of 187 for five. However, with the Royals choosing to field first, it was clear they thought this pitch would get better as the day went on.
With the tournament’s leading run-scorer in their team, Rajasthan would have definitely fancied their chances too. But Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for just 16 and when skipper Shane Watson followed in the ninth over, the Royals were looking second favourites at 71 for two.
As noted here by cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, it’s very much a case of “all or nothing” for Rahane when he takes to the field in IPL:
"Rahane has a tendency of playing one big shot early on to get him going. Gets him into trouble. If he gets away, then settles to look classy
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) May 1, 2015"
Although they lost two vital components early, credit must go to Sanju Samson and Steve Smith, who played very well to help rebuild the innings. However, while they were able to steady the ship, with such a big score on the board the run-rate required to win the match started to creep up as the overs ticked by.
Samson moved to his 50 in the 15th over, but on the ball immediately after, Smith slashed one to the Mumbai fielder and suddenly the Indians were big favourites again. But the 20-year-old was still in situ, still swinging hard at the ball and some devastating blows to the boundary kept Mumbai's hopes alive.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was very impressed with some of his shots:
"Last ten balls of Sanju Samson's innings made me go WOW...breathtaking shots. #MIvRR
— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) May 1, 2015"
But he was dismissed in the 18th over for a magnificent 76 from 46 balls and when Karun Nair followed the very next ball to the excellent Mitchell McClenaghan, the Royals' backs were against the wall big time, needing 26 from the last two overs.
As more wickets tumbled, the game got away from Rajasthan and they eventually lost the match by eight runs.
It’s been a difficult spell for Rajasthan. A tough run of results and a couple of games washed out by the weather has shunted their momentum as of late; Watson will be desperate for his men to regroup after this loss and rediscover the form which made them the finest side in the competition early on.
Mumbai really struggled for form early on in this tournament, but this latest win was their third in four matches. If they can keep this kind of level up for the remaining matches, Sharma’s men might fancy their chances of sneaking into the playoffs.
Delhi Daredevils Rise to 4th with Simple Win over Kings XI Punjab
4 of 4
Delhi Daredevils (119-1) bt. Kings XI Punjab (118-8) by nine wickets.
Shreyas Iyer's excellent knock of 54 led the Delhi Daredevils to a nine-wicket victory over Kings XI Punjab, pushing the former side to fourth in the Indian Premier League standings.
Kings XI batted first, but their position at the bottom of the table was summarised with an early fall of wickets.
Virender Sehwag managed one run before Zaheer Khan (2-17) burst into life. JP Duminy (1-15) quickly followed this by grabbing the wicket of Shaun Marsh (5), before Khan eliminated Manan Vohra (1) with the score set at 10 for three after 2.6 overs, reported by the competition's official website.
Shortly afterwards, Wriddhiman Saha (3) was dismissed by Nathan Coulter-Nile, who finished the day with the Daredevils' best bowling figures of four for 20. Coulter-Nile was responsible for key wickets, sending David Miller (42) and Axar Patel (22) back to the pavilion.
Shardul Thakur (7 n.o.) and Anureet Singh (8 n.o.) remained at the crease as 20 overs ticked over, but Kings XI knew a huge effort would be needed to take the win.
