Stanford Scratched from 2015 Kentucky Derby, Frammento Added to Field
Stanford has been scratched from the 2015 Kentucky Derby. His exit opens up a spot for the next eligible horse, Frammento, to join the field.
Churchill Downs PR confirmed the swap Thursday:
The Daily Racing Form noted how the post positions will change with Stanford's absence:
The Courier-Journal's Derby News feed highlighted what that means for favorite American Pharoah:
No reason for Stanford's removal from the race was immediately announced. However, Stonestreet Stables, Stanford's owners, revealed on Twitter that Stanford "is pointing to the Preakness."
The Todd Pletcher trainee has two wins in five career races. He finished second in each of his last two races, the Islamorada Handicap and the Louisiana Derby. Those were won by fellow Kentucky Derby horses, Materiality and International Star, respectively.
Frammento is slated to take his place. The colt has just one career victory in seven races. That came in a maiden special-weight race last October. His most recent start was a fourth-place finish in the Grade I Blue Grass Stakes, which was won by third choice in the Derby, Carpe Diem.
As noted by The Courier-Journal, he'll break from the extreme outside gate Saturday. If another horse is scratched before Friday at 9 a.m. ET, Tale of Verve will take its place.
