Kentucky Derby 2015: Mobile Live Stream Info, Race Schedule for Churchill Downs
With the post-position draw now officially in the books, it's time to start gearing up to watch the 2015 Kentucky Derby.
The draw made things very interesting for the field of 20 contenders. The odds-on favorite, American Pharoah, took a slight hit after drawing the No. 18 gate—a starting position that has only yielded one previous winner (Gato Del Sol in 1982). Meanwhile, Dortmund, the race's second favorite, had a great draw, acquiring the No. 8 gate that recently produced a winner in 2009 champion Mine That Bird.
Following the draw, Vegas oddsmakers scrambled to update the race's odds, as some horses drew favorable positions and should be expected to see plenty of betting action, while others—such as Ocho Ocho Ocho in the dreaded No. 1 gate—will likely fall by the wayside.
That said, let's take a look at the Kentucky Derby's updated post positions and odds, followed by a glance at all of the race's essential viewing information.

Race Analysis

American Pharoah is still the horse to watch on May 2; however, the three-year-old colt will have it a little tougher following a poor post-position draw. The odds-on favorite drew the No. 18 gate and will be starting far wider than his camp had hoped. He's a quick horse with a graceful gallop, but he'll need a tremendous start and plenty of endurance to make up the extra distance.
Luckily, Pharoah has showed his ability to get out of the gate quickly, maintain a solid pace throughout a race and salvage enough stamina to burst well in front of the pack when asked to run down the final stretch. Those traits were well on display in his eight-length victory in the Arkansas Derby. Take a look:
The only question that remains is if he can do the same starting from a poor position in a longer race.
Dortmund remains the Kentucky Derby's second favorite following the post draw. However, after he landed a good position in the No. 8 gate, the odds gap between him and Pharoah began to close. Rightfully so, as his gate has produced eight Derby winners, most recently Mine That Bird in 2009.
One of the uncertainties surrounding Dortmund entering the Kentucky Derby was his ability to finish in a longer race. He has a powerful stride and can maintain a good pace, but the additional length at Churchill Downs was thought to possibly be problematic.
Well, starting in the No. 8 gate will help reduce the distance he must run and increase his chances of donning the garland of roses. Dortmund has the ability to use his long legs to maintain a powerful stride throughout the race and put himself in a good position to make a run to the front late. Here's a look at how he employed that strategy during his 4 ¼-length win in the Santa Anita Derby:
Rounding out the top three is the Todd Pletcher-trained Carpe Diem. This colt didn't have the greatest draw and will start from the No. 2 gate. Beginning a jam-packed race so close to the rail can be detrimental to a horse's ability to get into a good position early in the race, as it can get pinned on the inside and lose momentum.
That will be a major concern for Carpe Diem in the Kentucky Derby, as anything less than a perfect start could doom the colt right from the onset of the race. The Blue Grass Stakes winner is still a very talented horse with the tools to compete at Churchill Downs, but he's a risky bet from a post position that hasn't yielded a winner since Affirmed in 1978.
