5 Tweaks Chelsea Need to Make to Dominate for Years to Come

Garry HayesMay 2, 2015

Chelsea may well be close to sealing the Premier League title this season, but Blues fans can rest assured that Jose Mourinho is already plotting his assault on retaining the trophy next season.

Mourinho is a manager who refuses to rest on his laurels, and he will be certain to strengthen his team over the summer months, addressing some key areas.

But what about further ahead than next year? What can Chelsea and Mourinho to do to ensure the club remains strong and in a position to dominate English football.

Mourinho has spoken of his desire to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson's legacy at Manchester United by making Chelsea England's leading club for a generation.

This season's league title is the start of that process. Now Bleacher Report identifies some tweaks that can ensure title parades are a regular occurrence along the King's Road.

Find John Terry's Long-Term Replacement

1 of 5

John Terry will be at Chelsea next season after signing a one-year contract extension in March.

His form this term has been phenomenal, belying his age and the impression that, at 34 years old, he shouldn't be able to compete at the highest level.

The Chelsea captain is a major reason why the Blues have led the Premier League from the opening weekend.

He's enjoying a renaissance, but that will not last forever.

If Chelsea are going to be England's dominant club—let alone Europe's—for the long term, then they need to find Terry's replacement.

It remains to be seen whether they are grooming Kurt Zouma or another Stamford Bridge youngster for that role or will dip into the transfer market.

Either way, finding a player to fill Terry's considerable boots—and soon—must be a high priority.

Integrate Their Talented Youth-Team Stars

2 of 5

Chelsea are dominating football at youth level.

They have won four out of the last six FA Youth Cups and this season added the UEFA Youth League to their impressive trophy haul.

The youngsters who have delivered that glory are the future of the club.

They are talented, ambitious and, importantly, come at a low cost to Chelsea—something that is vital given how financial fair play regulations are beginning to impact the game.

Bringing through talented youth players gives a club longevity, something Manchester United achieved with the much-famed Class of '92.

The likes of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes served United throughout their most dominant years in the Premier League.

They gave stability and were the spine of the team, with new additions from the transfer market working around them.

With the likes of Dominic Solanke, Izzy Brown and the rest, Chelsea could well do the same.

Add More Squad Depth

3 of 5

A big problem for Jose Mourinho since January is that he has lacked any real depth on the bench at Chelsea.

For a manager so well known for his ability to impact matches with his substitutes, Mourinho's bench has been rather unfulfilling.

The sale of Andre Schurrle has made that somewhat self-inflicted, with the German's replacement Juan Cuadrado failing to impress thus far.

The hope is Cuadrado will be far more impressive next term after spending six months adjusting, yet Chelsea are still lacking depth elsewhere.

Mourinho doesn't like to rotate his teams too often, although it's been clear that using such a limited number of players this season has meant Chelsea have looked leggy at times.

The first team at Stamford Bridge all but picks itself these days. Now Chelsea need to add some much-needed depth to ensure they have cover at key moments.

Find a Reliable and Consistent No. 10

4 of 5

Who is Chelsea's best No. 10 right now? It certainly isn't Oscar.

The Brazilian is exceptional when he wants to be, but all too often he frustrates with his ability to disappear for weeks at a time.

Chelsea can't entertain that. Not when they need their best players to be performing in the biggest games at the end of the season.

Jose Mourinho needs a player who will perform for an entire season, much in the same way Eden Hazard has done for the past two years.

If Oscar isn't going to be that man, then he needs to be replaced.

The form of Oscar is notoriously bad after Christmas, and it's meant Mourinho rotating his No. 10 since that time.

We've seen Cesc Fabregas play further forward, even Willian dropping in the hole at times, while Oscar himself has operated there.

Fabregas' best position is alongside Nemanja Matic in the pivot, though, where he has been most effective all year, while Willian also operates best on the right.

Oscar must step up soon, otherwise Chelsea need to look elsewhere.

Reduce the Reliance on Eden Hazard

5 of 5

An extension from our previous slide regarding No. 10s is that Chelsea need to reduce their reliance on Eden Hazard if they are to win trophies consistently.

Teams are already wise to the fact that the Belgian is their biggest attacking threat, and the tactics used to snuff him out are only going to intensify.

We've already seen it this season when Paris Saint-Germain targeted Hazard and, in so doing, ensured Chelsea were less dangerous than they should have been.

There needs to be another outlet in this Chelsea team.

Hazard will remain the key attacking player, yet Jose Mourinho must address the other areas where Chelsea aren't as much of a threat.

The No. 10 is a big part of that, but so too is the right side of midfield.

Adding variation to this team will only make Chelsea better and more formidable.
