Arsenal: Ranking Best and Worst Gunners Players for April

James McNicholasApr 28, 2015

April was another good month for Arsenal. The Gunners defeated Liverpool, earned a credible draw with league leaders Chelsea and navigated their way through to an FA Cup final.

As the season has worn on, the Gunners have looked increasingly impressive. Arsene Wenger has finally found a formula for success, and Arsenal look like a team who could mount a serious title challenge next season.

In this piece, we evaluate Arsenal's best and worst players during the month of April. Go to the next slide to begin the countdown of the Gunners' best performers over the last few weeks.

3rd Best: Francis Coquelin

1 of 6

Francis Coquelin's remarkable resurgence has continued throughout April. From being seemingly on the verge of leaving the club, he is now one of the first names on Arsene Wenger's teamsheet.

His steely performance helped Arsenal secure a clean sheet at Turf Moor, while he was also superb at shutting down Liverpool's counter-attacks in the 4-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

2nd Best: Hector Bellerin

2 of 6

It's very significant that Hector Bellerin was selected for the match against Chelsea at the end of the month.

Mathieu Debuchy had made his return to first-team action the previous week in the FA Cup semi-final against Reading, yet the inexperienced Spaniard retained his place in the Premier League. He coped admirably with PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard, too, suggesting he could well be the long-term occupant of the right-back role.

Best: Mesut Ozil

3 of 6

April saw Mesut Ozil produce some of his finest moments in an Arsenal shirt.

First, his brilliant free-kick helped dispatch Liverpool. Then, in the FA Cup semi-final, he played a stunning pass to create the opening goal for Alexis Sanchez.

Ozil is finally looking like a £42.5 million player, and Arsenal are reaping the benefits.

3rd Worst: Theo Walcott

4 of 6

Theo Walcott did not start a single match in the month of April. It seems he is still struggling to recapture the faith of Arsene Wenger.

Given the ineffective cameos he makes when he is released from the bench, that is not particularly surprising.

He was introduced late on against both Reading and Chelsea but made a minimal impact.

2nd Worst: Danny Welbeck

5 of 6

Danny Welbeck was handed a rare chance to start as a centre-forward at Reading, but he could not take advantage of the opportunity. Against Championship opposition, the former Manchester United man struggled to make an impact.

Having lost his place on the flank to Aaron Ramsey, Welbeck is currently struggling to tie down a regular place in the team.

Worst: Wojciech Szczesny

6 of 6

Wojciech Szczesny's demotion to the substitutes' bench makes his occasional outings in the cup competitions all the more important.

Unfortunately for the Polish goalkeeper, he looked far from convincing in the FA Cup semi-final with Reading, fumbling the ball over the line to allow the Royals back into the game in the second half.
