Barcelona vs. Getafe: Score, Grades, Reaction from La Liga

Ian RodgersApr 28, 2015

Barcelona's attacking triumvirate of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez made it over 100 goals between them for the season as the Blaugrana steamrolled Getafe at the Camp Nou.

Suarez and Messi both scored twice in the 6-0 rout, while Neymar was also on target in a devastating display by the Liga leaders, who extended their advantage over Real Madrid to five points.

Barcelona were five goals up at half-time, and while their forward line will take the headlines for their achievement on the night, it was another goalscorer who took the adulation of the home crowd when he was substituted on the hour mark.

Xavi Hernandez rolled back the years to produce a match-winning performance recalling those recent years when he and Andres Iniesta were arguably the best midfield coupling in the world. The 35-year-old might have been linked with a summer departure from the Camp Nou, according to ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, but Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique must be contemplating keeping the midfielder next season on this form alone.

Jordi Alba was suspended, while Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano were rested for the game. Xavi was named captain for the night and started in midfield.

After a one-minute reflection for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal, Barcelona got the game under way.

The first chance of the game came from an unexpected source, with Dani Alves testing Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita following a lofted Xavi pass into the area. Alves was again the central figure in Barcelona's next attack when Rafinha just missed his dangerous low ball into the area.

After eight minutes, Barcelona made their breakthrough. Alvaro Arroyo clipped Suarez as he turned to collect a Marc Bartra ball, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot, from where Messi chipped a Panenka past Guaita.

Rafinha almost added a second when his header from a Xavi corner flew just over the Getafe crossbar.

The home side appeared to be in cruise control, but Claudio Bravo was awoken when Fredy Hinestroza got a toe to the ball ahead of Bartra and lofted toward goal. The Barcelona goalkeeper was caught unaware and had to backpedal furiously to claw the ball from under his own crossbar.

ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan praised Bravo's recovery:

However, Bravo's fortune was soon forgotten as Barcelona added a second goal. Messi floated a ball from the right into the area, and Suarez struck first time beyond Guaita.

The Barcelona forward trio were now on 99 goals combined for the season, and they reached the century three minutes later.

Suarez burst forward in a central position and found Neymar to his left just inside the area. The Brazil international danced around Emiliano Velazquez's challenge before placing the ball home.

Not to be outdone, veteran Xavi added a fourth for the Camp Nou team when he drove home with a superb finish from outside the area.

It was a brutal lesson for the visitors, who learned that even when they seem relaxed, the Liga leaders are in no mood to show remorse.

Suarez grabbed his second of the night 10 minutes later. A one-two with Neymar saw Messi play the ball across the edge of the area, where a smart Xavi flicked into the path of the Uruguayan, who fired a curling strike around Guaita.

Barcelona received a standing ovation from the home crowd as they left the field at half-time with a 5-0 lead.

With the game already won, Luis Enrique switched Sergio Busquets for Sergi Roberto ahead of the second period.

Two minutes into the second half, Barcelona extended their lead to 6-0. Suarez clipped a ball to Messi on the right-hand side of the area, and Messi cut inside before sending another curling shot beyond the Getafe goalkeeper.

The Camp Nou rose as one in the 59th minute to salute Xavi, who left the field to be replaced by Pedro, while Martin Montoya replaced Dani Alves 10 minutes later.

With the victory ensured to keep the pressure on second-placed Real Madrid, who play on Wednesday night, Barcelona took their collective foot off the gas, although Suarez went close to a hat-trick with a drive from the edge of the Getafe area.

Guaita produced a fine diving save to his right in the 84th minute to deny Messi a hat-trick with a free-kick from just outside the area.

The withdrawal of Xavi also played a part in Barcelona's less frantic pace in the closing stages, but the home side had already done all that was necessary to move closer to the title.

Selected Player Ratings

The mercurial Barcelona star was once again not at his very best, but Messi in second gear can still be enough to win games. His wonderful ninth-minute penalty opened the scoring, while his second was pure class.

Luis Suarez: A+

The Barcelona forward scored two great goals in the first half while also assisting two. It was a sublime display from the Uruguayan international, who is now proving as invaluable as Messi and Neymar to Luis Enrique.

Xavi Hernandez: A

The veteran Barcelona midfielder rolled back the years with his sublime 30th-minute goal and some excellent play in midfield. His flick for Barcelona's fifth goal was a thing of beauty.
