Bryce Petty to Jets: New York Selects QB in 2015 NFL Draft

Matt FitzgeraldMay 1, 2015

Former Baylor star Bryce Petty had two extremely productive years under center in Waco, Texas. Bleacher Report expert Matt Miller considers Petty the No. 3 quarterback prospect, behind only first-rounders Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. The quarterback finally heard his name called 103rd overall, and is heading to the New York Jets.

Albert Breer of NFL Network reported that Petty was drafted 103rd overall, by the New York Jets.

Petty can really spin the pigskin, but he'll be asked to fit the ball into much tighter windows going forward. That isn't necessarily impossible for Petty to adjust to as a rookie; the margin for error will just be a lot smaller than he's been accustomed to.

Strong intangibles and work ethic suggest Petty has the faculties to take on the immense responsibility of playing the most important position in football at the highest level. His biggest battle will be adjusting from a one-read, spread system at Baylor to far more complex NFL schematics.

The NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah weighed in on Petty's pro prospects on Path to the Draft (via NFL.com's Mike Huguenin): "When I look at Bryce Petty starting at the next level, I think he has that potential but I think it's a few years off...You wouldn't think a guy that threw as much as he did in college is a project, but to come out of that system (at Baylor) and adjust into an NFL system, I think it's going to take some time."

Measuring at 6'3" and 230 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine, Petty has the prototypical size to absorb punishment. He was also a top performer in the 20-yard shuttle and the three-cone drill, showing off quickness and agility that will be useful when pass-rushers are in Petty's face and when he climbs the pocket.

Whether or not Petty can hang in the face of pressure long enough and learn to scan the entire field will determine how successful he is. There's no telling where he might land, but Petty shouldn't be expected to turn out as a franchise savior under center right from the start.
