IPL 2015: Stats on Top Run-Scorers, Wicket-Takers, T20 Averages and More
Hyderabad Sunrisers were able to defend a mediocre total against Kings XI Punjab on Monday, sampling a 20-run victory in Mohali.
Had it not been for David Warner, Hyderabad would have been cut adrift at the bottom of the standings by now. And their captain shone once again, hitting a fine 58 at the top of the order. Unfortunately for Sunrisers fans, it was a knock their team couldn’t take advantage of, as they stuttered to a score of 150 for six from their 20 overs.
The bowling from Hyderabad was in much better shape, as they prised out four Kings XI wickets inside the first nine overs. From that point on, Kings XI never looked likely victors and they finished up on 130 for nine. Trent Boult shone with the ball for Hyderabad, taking three wickets for just 19 runs.
Here’s how this match affects various individual classifications and a closer look at some of the standout players from this absorbing fixture.

David Warner Sets Tempo for Hyderabad
With Shikhar Dhawan struggling for form once again at the top of the order, it was left to David Warner to lay some early foundations for Hyderabad on Monday. As he has done so throughout this tournament, the Aussie batsman played with a superb blend of poise and power up front.
His 58 from 41 balls was hugely entertaining to watch, with 46 runs coming in boundaries, as Warner struck 10 fours and a six during his time at the crease. As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, with little depth in their batting line-up, the influence of Warner is hugely important for this Hyderabad team:
"David Warner has single-handedly provided #SRH with a start decent enough for his flimsy middle-order to capitalise on. #IPL #KXIPvSRH #SRH
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 27, 2015"
Warner departed in the 10th over with the Sunrisers pretty well set on 76 for three. But once again, the batsmen lower down the order were unable to capitalise on the start from their skipper. Moises Henriques and Naman Ojha hit decent totals of 30 and 28 respectively, but the arduous pace they scored at would have delighted Kings XI Punjab.
Warner will be disappointed to see his team fail to capitalise on his brilliance, but as we can see here courtesy of cricket statistician Bharath Seervi, the Aussie is fast establishing himself as one of the best overseas performers in IPL history:
"Most 50+ scores in #IPL 26 Gambhir 25 Raina 24 Rohit Sharma 22 Gayle/WARNER 20 Dhawan 18 Marsh/Sehwag/Kohli #KXIPvsSRH
— Bharath Seervi (@SeerviBharath) April 27, 2015"
There’s little more Warner can do to help his team, truth be told. His batting has been exemplary so far, as has his fielding and aggressive brand of captaincy. But with nobody else firing with the bat and meagre totals pretty commonplace, at the moment the World Cup winner will feel a little limited in his endeavours.
Brilliant Trent Boult Shines for Sunrisers
Starting quickly when defending a small total is so important in this particular format, and just as he did for New Zealand throughout the recent World Cup, Trent Boult showcased his immense quality with the new ball in hand.
He bowled three overs from the off, not only restricting the runs scored by the dangerous Kings XI openers but taking the key wicket of Manan Vohra. After stuttering to a mediocre total with the bat, Boult’s early aggression helped the Sunrisers seize the momentum back from their opponents.
As we can see, with players like Boult in situ, it’s little surprise this is a team so adept at defending small totals:
"Statically #SRH are the best team in #IPL history at defending scores of less than 150; and they've done it again today. #KXIPvSRH #KXIP
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 27, 2015"
While Boult was economical in his opening three overs, with Kings XI creeping back into the game late on, Warner turned to his strike bowler to extinguish any lingering hopes of victory. The Kiwi responded, too, cleaning up Axar Patel with the first ball of the over before dismissing the dangerous Wriddhiman Saha five balls later.
Hyderabad’s batting line-up remains a little imbalanced, but in Boult, they have a class act with the ball. After a strong showing Down Under, the New Zealand star has carried some glittering form into this IPL, and it’s imperative he keeps it up if Hyderabad are to have any hope of securing a play-off spot.
