Detroit Red Wings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

TAMPA, FL - APRIL 25: Brenden Morrow #10 of the Tampa Bay Lightning battles against Joakim Andersson #18 and Tomas Jurco #26 of the Detroit Red Wings during the first period in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals during the 2015 NHL Stanley

If the way this series has unfolded is any indication, this one is going to seven games. The teams have alternated wins over the first five games. The Detroit Red Wings grabbed 1-0 and 2-1 series leads before the Tampa Bay Lightning leveled things up.

The Red Wings have been brutally efficient with the way they've approached the Lightning. That was one aspect of Game 5 CBSSports.com's Chris Peters highlighted in his analysis of the result—a 4-0 win for Detroit:

"

The Lightning need to be more creative and decisive on the rush. With the way Detroit is playing defensively, Tampa Bay has to find a way to gain the zone more cleanly. It's easier said than done. The Red Wings are jamming plays in the neutral zone and when the Lightning actually gain the blue line, the puck carrier is surrounded. It's the same thing over and over and until the Lightning find a way around it, their offensive attack will continue to sputter. When a rush team can't get anything going on the rush, they're going to struggle.

"

Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper had another way to put it, per Joe Smith of of the Tampa Bay Times:

Only the New York Rangers are allowing fewer goals per game than the Red Wings through the first round of the playoffs so far. While that's not necessarily a large sample size, Detroit did rank eighth in shot attempts allowed per game during the regular season.

Mind you, the Red Wings are playing this well against a team that ranked first in scoring.

Whether it's in Detroit or Tampa, the Red Wings should wrap this series up. On the whole, Detroit has arguably been the better team, and had it not given up two goals in the third period of Game 4, it likely would have already advanced.

Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders

Apr 23, 2015; Washington, DC, USA; Washington Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov (92) celebrates with goalie Braden Holtby (70) after their game against the New York Islanders in game five of the first round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Verizon Cente

No team has been worse on the power play this postseason than the New York Islanders. They have failed to convert any of their chances so far. That statistic isn't necessarily damning on its own. The Rangers ranked 21st on the power play this year and earned more points than anybody else.

In a tight series where three games have been decided by a single goal, a failure to capitalize on man advantages could be the difference between advancement and an early exit.

The Washington Capitals have a glaring issue of their own—their recent Game 7 history. Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post noted that the team is 2-4-1 at this stage since 2007-08.

There's no better statistic to sum up a franchise that has so often exited the playoffs much earlier than expected.

"The main thing is having no regrets," said Capitals forward Joel Ward, per Prewitt. "You don’t want to have any shoulda-woulda-couldas."

After all, a team's past failures only count for so much.

At a certain point, you have to wonder if injuries to Calvin de Haan, Travis Hamonic and Lubomir Visnovsky will catch up to the Islanders. Those are three big pieces to be missing at such a critical juncture. New York has covered for their absences well, but sooner or later, it has to become a major issue.

Between that, the Islanders' poor penalty record and Washington getting Game 7 at home, the Capitals will advance.
