IPL 2015 Results: Scores, Points Table and Schedule After April 25 Double-Header
Mumbai Indians picked up a priceless victory, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs in a tense game at the Wankhede Stadium in the Indian Premier League.
A superb bowling display from the Sunrisers helped limit the hosts to 157 for eight from their 20 overs, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar especially impressive. But Hyderabad lost early wickets in the chase, surrendered momentum and were subsequently unable to haul themselves to the target, with Lasith Malinga tearing through the middle order in the latter stages.
The day’s later saw Chennai Super Kings coast to a dominant 97-run victory over Kings XI Punjab. Superb efforts with the bat from Brendon McCullum and MS Dhoni helped Chennai to 192 for three with the bat; Punjab never looked capable of chasing it down after starting poorly and collapsed to 95 for nine inside their 20 overs.
Read on for more detail on how the matches played out and a look at how these results affect the overall standings in this year’s IPL.

Chennai Crush Kings XI
3 of 4
Chennai Super Kings (193/3) beat Kings XI Punjab (98/9) by 97 runs
Some big hitting from the Chennai Super Kings’ clutch of superstar batsmen pushed them a mammoth total of 193 for the loss of just three wickets in their 20 overs.
As he so often does, Brendon McCullum lead by example at the top of the order. The New Zealand captain played with his patented aggression, forcing the pressure back on to the visitors’ bowlers. Alongside Dwayne Smith—who made 26 off just 13 balls—they put on 50 runs inside five overs.
When his fellow opener departed, McCullum continued taking the fight to the opponents, with Suresh Raina playing studiously alongside him. As we can see here courtesy of HoldingWilleyCricket, McCullum played a superb knock before getting out:
"OUT! McCullum smacks Axar to long on, and thankfully Miller is there, so he holds on to it. 66 of 44, 8 fours 3 sixes. #CSKvKXIP
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 25, 2015"
The rate had slowed a little after that blistering start though, and it wasn’t until MS Dhoni strode out to the crease after the loss of the aforementioned duo that things got going again for Chennai. The skipper has struggled for form so far at this tournament, but he looked in excellent fettle here smashing 41 off 27 balls.
As noted here by India cricket expert Shirin Sadikot, Dhoni’s effort was very different from that of the Black Caps star:
"McCullum 66 off 44 (SR: 150) % in boundary 75.75 Dhoni 41 off 27 (SR: 151.85) % in boundary 48.78 MSD = Master of strike rotation #PepsiIPL

Alongside compatriot Ravindra Jadeja, the captain steered Chennai to a formidable haul of 193 for three. For a Kings XI Punjab team who have inconsistent, that had been smashed around the pitch and struggling for form with the bat, it was going to be a very tough chase.
But there are few who would have anticipated a collapse quite as considerable as the one that ensued, as Kings XI crumbled in spectacular fashion. Aside from Murali Vijay at the top of the order—who made a stubborn 34—the rest of the batsmen were extremely poor, as the Chennai bowlers helped themselves to wicket after wicket.
As noted by cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, the Kings XI batters had no answer whatsoever to the spin bowling of Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who took three and two wickets respectively:
"I'm afraid #KingsXI could well be imploding here. And solving the only problem #CSK had: getting spinners back in form.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 25, 2015"
Therefore, this match was never really a contest. When the Super Kings had Kings XI on 69 for seven, the Punjab outfit would have been delighted to have avoided a 100-run defeat. Eventually they were able to, but the chasm between two teams that were so evenly-matched last season was staggering, as Chennai secured a 97-run triumph.
Former India spinner Aakash Chopra was disappointed with the lack of fight showcased by Kings XI:
"Expected a slightly better fight from #KXIP disappointed. So much was riding on Viru to fire on a spin-friendly pitch. #IPL
— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 25, 2015"
Indeed, there are big problems within their ranks, it would seem. The dramatic victory over Rajasthan Royals last time out looked as though it may be a springboard for this side, but they were simply atrocious here; against a team as quality as Chennai, any frailties will be ruthlessly seized upon.
From the Super Kings' perspective, seeing every aspect of the side flourish will be a major boost for Dhoni, as will moving to the summit of the table. The contrast between the brutish batting and intricate spin-bowling was a wonderful example of the balance in this squad and if they continue to perform with such confidence, there are no sides in this competition capable of living with Chennai.
Mumbai Secure Comfortable Victory over Hyderabad
4 of 4
Mumbai Indians (157/8) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (137/8) by 20 runs.
After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Mumbai Indians struggled to inject any kind of impetus into their play. For Hyderabad Sunrisers, the bowling was excellent, with Dale Steyn, Trent Boult and Bhuvneshwar Kumar all making critical contributions with the ball.
The latter of that trio was particularly impressive during his allotted four overs. He took the wickets of the dangerous duo of Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard in the latter stages of the innings, preventing Mumbai from launching a counter-attack after an arduous start to their batting effort.
As noted by HoldingWilleyCricket, the India international was outperforming some pretty illustrious names:
"Bhuvi 4-0-26-3! Brilliant bowling by this guy performing better than Boult and Steyn! #MIvSRH #IPL
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 25, 2015"
While Pollard smashed 33 from 24 balls down the order, the stiffest resistance the Sunrisers came across was from Lendl Simmons. The opener lead from the front, playing with an aggression and intent that has been scarce in this Indians team so far this season.
Simmons finished up with 51 from 42 deliveries before he was bowled by Steyn, and after his dismissal, Mumbai struggled for rhythm. As we can see here courtesy of Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, the West Indies batsman has been a revelation for the Indians since he joined:
"Lendl Simmons for #MI: 51, 15, 59, 5, 13 79*, 7, 67, 12 35, 100*, 62, 12, 68, 38. #IPL #MIvSRH #SRH

The bowling from Hyderabad was superb at the death, with Mumbai’s lower order going hard at the ball to little avail. At the end of the 20 overs, the Sunrisers will have been delighted to limit their opponents to 157 for eight, especially with David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan leading the charge with the bat.
They both looked to get their innings off to a fast start, and with 45 runs on the board inside five overs, they did exactly that. Dhawan in particular was looking extremely well set, smashing eight boundaries in a blistering 42 from 29 balls. Things quickly unravelled for Hyderabad though, when both openers were dismissed in consecutive overs.
As we can see here courtesy of the tournament’s official Twitter feed, Lasith Malinga definitely enjoyed the wicket of the Aussie, who was out for just nine:
"David Warner not amused by Malinga's send-off #IPL https://t.co/Ac8WF87xHp
— IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 25, 2015"
The double blow brought two new batsman to the wicket, and when Naman Ojha was gone for just nine, the momentum had swung back in Mumbai’s favour with Hyderabad toiling on 68 for three. Lokesh Rahul and Ravi Bopara came together to help steady the innings, but it was slow going and the early momentum created by Warner and Dhawan had abated.
As noted here, Hyderabad needed a boost from someone:
"#SRH need a nitro boost now! Else #MI shall get them here #MIvSRH #IPL
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 25, 2015"
Instead, they lost another wicket and with a lack of depth in their batting lineup, the chase seemed to be getting away from the Sunrisers. Bopara kept things ticking over nicely though, and with Hanuma Vihari seeking to up the ante with some swipes to the boundary, their chances of victory had yet to be completely extinguished.
But when the England international departed, the wheels came off, with Malinga blitzing through the lower order to take three wickets in four balls in the 19th over. Hyderabad eventually finished up on 137 for eight and 20 runs short in their pursuit.
It’s been a tough start to the 2015 IPL for Mumbai, showing inconsistencies throughout their opening matches that have made them outsiders to make it to the playoffs. But this was a much more encouraging display, one that proved the Indians have the steel needed to come through in tight situations.
One win won’t help alleviate the weaknesses that have punctured their tournament to date, but this is a victory that should give Rohit Sharma’s men a major boost as they gear up for sterner challenges in the matches to come.
