Quite simply, it's a surprise a fight between these two superstars came together. After a handful of years of mainstream discussion about the possibility but no real progress toward an agreement between the sides, it seemed like the chance had come and gone.
Then suddenly, with both fighters seeking an opponent and a limited number of good options, things came together to create a superfight. It's created the type of attention boxing has been desperately seeking in recent years.
It's a bout that's going to go a long way in determining the long-term legacies of both boxers. They have each put together terrific careers but had never faced off with the top opponent of the era.
Yet, Pacquiao doesn't sound overly concerned about what could happen. He spoke with Gareth Davies of The Telegraph about his mindset.
"I'm doing my best in training to make sure I am at 100% condition," Pacquiao said. "To make sure I am doing my job, as a human. I am preparing for the fight mentally, physically and, most importantly, spiritually."
The biggest key in the fight for "Pac-Man" is being aggressive in the early going. Mayweather is likely to come out highly defensive. The Filipino sensation must win a couple rounds right off the bat to get the undefeated American out of that shell.
If it becomes a more wide-open fight where he's able to showcase his quickness and power, he'll have a good chance. Should "Money" be able to set a slower pace, letting him use his defense and counterattacking skills, the edge will be clearly in his favor.
Greg Logan of Newsday passed along the outlook from ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas, who believes Pacquiao has a puncher's chance, literally.
"The greatest strength of Mayweather is his greatest weakness," Atlas said. "He's so defensive that he gives you a chance to go to work. Pacquiao's hand speed gives him an opportunity to outhustle Mayweather and grab some rounds ... Floyd's great, but Pacquiao has a chance."
One question coming out of the fight, barring a completely lopsided result, will be whether the high-profile duo is going to face off again. As mentioned, the vibe is that it's a one-off showcase, but the long-term outlook understandably hasn't been the focus leading into the fight.
Andy Glockner of The Cauldron makes his prediction for how it will all play out:
It's a realistic outlook for sure. A lot will probably depend on how Mayweather feels the first fight went. If it's a comfortable victory and he believes his unblemished record isn't in any danger, it would probably be tough to turn down another massive payday.
There will be plenty of time for that discussion afterward, of course. For now the focus is on the marquee fight the boxing world has been waiting for. Hopefully it delivers.
