IPL 2015: Top Run-Scorers, T20 Averages, Wicket-Takers After Delhi vs. Mumbai
Delhi Daredevils were too good for the Mumbai Indians, as the hosts coasted to a 37-run win.
A magnificent stand of 156 between Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy helped Delhi to an imposing total of 190 for four after being put into bat. Both men played superbly after the loss of a very early wicket for the Daredevils.
In response, Mumbai lost a clutch of wickets up front to make a successful chase unlikely. But just when they were establishing a foothold in the game an inspired spell from Imran Tahir—including three wickets in four balls—curtailed any lingering hopes.
Here’s how this win for Delhi affects various individual standings and a closer examination of some of the standout performers from this encounter.

Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy Thrill For Delhi
After losing Mayank Agarwal with just the third ball of the innings, the Delhi Daredevils were in desperate need of a steadying partnership. When JP Duminy strode to the crease to accompany Shreyas Iyer, they got that and a lot more.
The Daredevils surged with those two at the crease and 156 runs later in the 17th over, they were well placed to go on and make a massive score. It was Iyer who lead the chase initially, with a superb 83 before he was bowled by Lasith Malinga.
As noted here by cricket statistician Mohandas Menon, the 20-year-old is a very entertaining player to watch, but he still has plenty to learn:
"Two of the exciting batsmen in #IPL 2015 are Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Hooda... but they both get out to some daft shots #DDvsMI
— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) April 23, 2015"
It probably helped the young man having a steadying influence like Duminy at the other end during their 156-run stand. The South African played with poise early on, allowing his youthful teammate to take the initiative, but in the latter stages he accelerated with distinction, finishing up with an unbeaten 78 that included six towering sixes.
As noted by Cricbuzz, their partnership was the highest in the competition so far:
"150-partnership between Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy. This is the highest partnership for any wicket in #IPL8. #CB #IPL #DDvMI
— Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) April 23, 2015"
Ultimately, it was the exploits of these two that laid the foundations for an impressive total of 190 for the Daredevils. There is an exciting blend between youthful exuberance and experience in their squad and that was on show in earnest here during this engrossing effort from both Iyer and Duminy.
Imran Tahir Curtails Mumbai’s Late Hopes
South Africa’s superb spin bowler Imran Tahir served up a reminder of why he’s the leading wicket-taker in this tournament, producing a masterclass in the latter stages of the match to extinguish Mumbai’s chances.
With Rohit Sharma and Amabti Rayudu at the crease, the Indians still would have fancied their chances of getting back into the match. But after the former was dismissed, Tahir was drafted in and he took three wickets in four balls to completely derail any lingering hopes of a late charge.
As noted by AltCricket, Tahir is an expert in this particular format:
"Imran Tahir knows where to bowl in IPL. Wide, full, spinning away = very tough to hit for six.
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) April 23, 2015"
Indeed, the amount of wickets he’s secured already shows how important spin bowlers are in this dynamic format. Tahir is superb at frustrating batsmen, subsequently prompting them into rash decisions and prising them out with his subtle variations.
At this juncture the Proteas’ star is the finest bowler in the entire competition and for Duminy, having a player who is so reliable in terms of wicket-taking and bowling economically is a luxury that very few skippers can enjoy.
