The Favorites
The real winner at this year's Derby might end up being trainer Bob Baffert.
Baffert, of course, has the distinction of training both Dortmund and American Pharoah. The former has already won at Churchill Downs and is coming into the race undefeated. Dortmund is also the favorite in many eyes. Of course, American Pharoah impressed in a dominant win at the Arkansas Derby and certainly earned the praise of Baffert after that race.
"I've had a lot of nice horses," he told The Associated Press, via the Hartford Courant. "I think he's the most exceptional 3-year-old."
High praise, indeed. And an indication that Baffert thinks American Pharoah might be the horse he trains to take the Derby, despite many other folks favoring Dortmund.
Of course, Baffert won't be the only well-known trainer trotting out a contender. Todd Pletcher's Carpe Diem should contend as well, as the horse has lost just once, while Materiality took home the Florida Derby. Frosted won the Wood Memorial and has Joel Rosario as a jockey. He of course won the 2013 Derby on Orb.
And don't forget about Firing Line and Upstart. Each would be upstart winners, excuse the pun, if he pulled off the win, but we've seen plenty of surprises at the Derby in years past.
Until you hear the words, "And they're off," well, you just never know. Baffert has to be feeling pretty good, however.
