UCLA Football: 4 Players to Watch in Bruins' Spring Game

Jason FrayApr 23, 2015

With spring football officially in the books, the UCLA football team will cap it off with a Spring Showcase on April 25 at the Rose Bowl.

It's been a very productive period for Jim Mora's team. UCLA has suffered no serious injuries, installation with new defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has appeared to go smoothly and the Bruins look like they have multiple options to replace Brett Hundley at quarterback.

This piece will take a look at four Bruins to watch during the spring game. While these four aren't necessarily the four best players from the spring ball period, each come with certain levels of intrigue.

Here are four UCLA football players to watch during the spring game this upcoming Saturday.

Randall Goforth

Heading into last season, Randall Goforth was the leader of the Bruins secondary. This was largely due to his impressive instincts and high football I.Q.

Ultimately, Goforth was lost early in the season due to surgery on both shoulders. UCLA's secondary did play well for the most part. However, there were times in which it was sorely missing its quarterback in the back end.

Goforth's return will be interesting to see. He's been limited mostly in a red jersey throughout spring practice (as a precaution), but he's looked good nonetheless.

As David Woods of BruinReportOnline.com noted, "[Goforth] has had a very impressive spring for a guy still coming off of shoulder surgery, and if we had to guess, he's going to have a pretty big year."

Jordan Lasley

Jordan Lasley is someone the casual fan will be excited to see.

The wide receiver hailing from Gardena Serra High School is an explosive athlete with very good speed. Lasley's characteristics as a player will be a welcome sight for a unit in need of quickness and athleticism. He could ultimately be the deep threat UCLA's lacked in recent years.

He's also a volatile player. Lasley's had some attitude issues throughout camp—which has included a few quarrels with teammates.

If anything, it will be fascinating to see how the redshirt freshman performs this upcoming Saturday. Lasley could potentially be a very significant piece for the offense going forward in 2015.

Takk McKinley

Defensive end Takk McKinley has perhaps the highest upside of any player on the entire UCLA roster.

He was put behind the proverbial eight-ball last year due to his late enrollment. As a result, McKinley never went through fall camp or a conditioning program. He was literally thrust into action during the third game of the season.

Looking at this spring, McKinley has benefited from an offseason conditioning program. He now also has a greater understanding of the playbook and what's being asked of him on the field.

It appears as if McKinley is the leading candidate to fill the vacant starting defensive end spot left by Owa Odighizuwa. Should McKinley continue to improve on the nuances of the position, the sky's the limit for his potential.

Josh Rosen

Is anyone surprised at Josh Rosen's inclusion on this list?

Regarded as one of the top players nationally in the class of 2015, Rosen has lived up to his lofty billing thus far in camp. In fact, it'd be a surprise if Rosen did not start this season as a true freshman.

The hype surrounding Rosen is tangible at this point. A vast majority of the fans expected at the Rose Bowl will indeed be highly interested in seeing Rosen perform.

On Saturday, the UCLA fanbase will get its first look at the quarterback of the future—and the potential face of the program.
