West Indies vs. England, 2nd Test, Day 2: Highlights, Scorecard and Report

Alex LivieApr 22, 2015

England snatched the initiative on Day 2 of the second Test with West Indies but face a long road if they are to push for victory in Grenada.

On a second successive day affected by rain, England bowled West Indies out for 299 and made it to 74 for zero at stumps.

With three days remaining, England will need to build with the bat and hope to put West Indies under pressure towards the end of the game.

As on the first day, the start of play was delayed when rain rolled in from over the mountains.

When play got underway, Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin made a steady start and took West Indies beyond 200 before another bout of rain took the players off the field and forced an early lunch.

After a lengthy delay, Samuels returned to the crease to bring up his century by steering the ball over the slips for four.

Two balls later, England were celebrating as Samuels heaved at a wide ball from James Anderson and edged to Ian Bell at second slip.

England were guilty of dropping catches on the first day, but on this occasion, Bell hung onto a sharp chance.

Jason Holder joined Ramdin at the crease and carried on as he left off in the first Test by batting with authority, but both fell in quick succession to Stuart Broad.

Broad was guilty of bowling too short on the first day, but he shifted his length forward and was rewarded with two wickets—both drives that were edged behind to Jos Buttler.

When Kemar Roach became Broad's fourth victim of the innings, West Indies were tottering at 247 for nine.

However, Devendra Bishoo and Shannon Gabriel—West Indies' 10 and 11—showed excellent spirit and skill to take the team total to 299 before the former fell to the spin of Moeen Ali.

There was plenty of pressure on Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott after failing in the first Test, but Roach and Gabriel lacked discipline in their bowling, and it enabled the England openers to settle.

While bigger challenges lie ahead for Cook, he moved himself to second in England's all-time run scorers before the close of play—with only Graham Gooch now ahead of him.

Bishoo was tossed to ball towards the end of play to test the pitch's receptiveness to spin, but there was little turn for the leggie—although he did trouble Cook with his flight—as England made it to stumps unscathed.
