Chara Comments on Fractured Fibula
Thursday, April 23
Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe provided comments from Chara, who "did not know about [the] leg fracture until days after [the] season completed." Per Dupont, the initial X-ray didn't show a break. He shared this quote from Chara:
On April 21, the Bruins' official Twitter account provided clarity on Chara's injury status, including an expected timeline for recovery:
Though it's uncertain when the injury occurred, Chara blocked a shot in a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 4 and was missing from practice thereafter.
Boston's team captain played the final three regular-season games, which all ended in losses on the road. Though the Bruins finished two points behind Pittsburgh for the final playoff spot in the East, it's hard to imagine Chara could have carried on much longer on his broken leg.
The massive Chara (6'9", 255 lbs) will now have ample time to recover and help Boston bounce back from its first failure to qualify for the playoffs since the 2006-07 campaign.
However, Mike Halford of ProHockeyTalk notes that Slovakian news outlet Sport.sme reports that the injury will keep Chara out of the upcoming world hockey championships, where Chara was expected to represent Slovakia in May.
