Champions League: Mixed Fortunes for Porto's Mexico Pair Herrera and Reyes

Karla Villegas GamaApr 21, 2015

Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes appeared with Porto in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal, and their fortunes were completely opposite.

It was a one-sided match in the first 45 minutes. Julen Lopetegui's side tried to stop Bayern Munich, but the power of the German squad was simply too much.

The defensive problems started early on the match. Bayern's aerial game helped them secure their first three goals.

Reyes was one of the men who fell short. The Mexican's performance was far from impressive. No wonder why he only spent 32 minutes on the pitch.

It was the centre-back's first Champions League game of the season, and he wasted his chance to make an impact.

The Mexican struggled when it came to stopping the rivals, mainly because he appeared in a position that's not his. Reyes took over the left flank instead of the center of the box.

It was a shame because we had seen him perform well lately.

With Mexico, he reminded us of the fine defender we saw with America when he faced Ecuador and Paraguay.

Reyes was the only footballer who started both games, proving to be one of Miguel Herrera's most trusted men.

Against Ecuador, the centre-back completed 82 percent of the passes he sent, he recovered 11 balls and played the whole match, per Mi Seleccion Gamecast.

He really shined versus Paraguay.

Reyes managed to keep the forwards on check, despite their superiority on the physical end. The Mexican also completed 93 percent of the passes he sent and recovered seven balls, according to Mi Seleccion Gamecast.

After that, he returned to Porto, where last week, he made a start wearing the captain's armband.

Lopetegui kept his trust in the Mexican, but it didn't work.

Reyes won half of the tackles in which he was involved. Plus, he only made two clearances and one block.

It was a dreadful night for Reyes, who is most likely headed to play with Porto's B-team yet again.

But keep in mind one thing. The defender hasn't gotten as much playing time as he had wished. It's pretty obvious that he lacks continuity, which is more evident when he faces heavyweights like Bayern.

As it has happened with several Mexicans who haven't had the success they expected in Europe, Reyes needs to leave the club if he wants to get back to the playing level he used to have.

On the other hand, we have the best Mexican footballer of the moment.

Herrera keeps amazing with his speed, fine touch and hunger to help his team no matter the scenario.

The midfielder covered 11,704 meters and completed 80 percent of the his passes, per UEFA.com.

Despite the fact his team was losing, Herrera never stopped fighting. He ran and tried to create as many goal opportunities as possible.

The Mexican succeeded in the second half, as he assisted Jackson Martinez for Porto's only goal.

Defensively, Herrera also helped his side, as he made two interceptions and three take-ons.

There is no doubt that he is going through a fantastic moment even when his club was far from being a true competitor in the match.

Herrera's performance is also a reminder that he will most definitively play in the Gold Cup, a key tournament for Mexico as they are hoping to appear in a playoff against the United States for a ticket to the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Moreover, it will continue to increase his value in the European market. It wouldn't be rare to see several heavyweights fighting for the midfielder in the summer transfer market.
