Bayern Munich vs. Porto: Score, Grades, Reaction from UCL Quarter-Final 2nd Leg

Tom SunderlandApr 21, 2015

Bayern Munich sauntered to a 6-1 win against FC Porto on Tuesday evening to claim a 7-4 aggregate victory and clinch their spot in the semi-finals of this season's UEFA Champions League.

The official Champions League Twitter account confirmed the result after Pep Guardiola's men eased their way to triumph following five first-half goals:

It was clear from kick-off at the Allianz Arena that Der FCB were angered by the 3-1 defeat suffered at the Estadio do Dragao last week, looking to make up for their mistakes as swiftly as possible on home turf.

And it was one of Guardiola's favourite disciples, Thiago Alcantara, who opened the scoring after 14 minutes by heading home a Juan Bernat cross that halved Bayern's goal requirement for the evening to just one.

Thiago isn't long-returned from the knee injury that kept him sidelined for a year, but he managed to net his second goal against the Dragons in as many outings to continue his recent stretch of good form.

With away goals ruling in Bayern Munich's favour, Jerome Boateng sealed the deal just eight minutes later, rising to meet a Holger Badstuber cross in the 22nd minute:

Julen Lopetegui may have expected a stern test from the Bavarian hosts, but leaking two goals so early on would surely represent a major dent in the Porto manager's plans.

Unfortunately for the Portuguese visitors, those early goals only played into the hands of Bayern, leaving Match of the Day's Gary Lineker with the inclination that a rout was en route:

That's precisely what came to fruition as the Germans came to not only safeguard their lead, but eclipse it in a major way and establish a five-goal lead after just 40 minutes.

Thomas Muller assisted on two goals for Robert Lewandowski while getting on the scoresheet himself, but OptaCan pointed out Bayern's exquisite third (Lewandowski's first) as the pick of the bunch:

This was Bayern at their domineering best, controlling possession with a maestro's grip and pulling Porto apart as they pleased.

ESPN FC detailed just how one-sided the affair looked at the halfway mark:

Guardiola's only gripe would have been that his team couldn't replicate the same dominance in the second period, adding just a single goal to their tally.

However, Xabi Alonso wouldn't add that sixth until Jackson Martinez contributed his consolation effort for Lopetegui's men, which Bleacher Report's Cristian Nyari revealed as something of an achievement in itself:

Ultimately, the gulf between Porto and Bayern was vast and evident, but for a while there, it looked as though the Dragons were capable of rising against the tide to record something historic.

Guardiola's giants will now stride into their semi-final—against whoever that may be—brimming with confidence but more importantly having learned a lesson in complacency along the way.

Player Grades

Robert Lewandowski: A+

There have been periods of his maiden campaign at the Allianz Arena that could have been smoother, but Tuesday's performance showcased Robert Lewandowski at his refined best.

The Polish forward netted two goals in the first half to aid Bayern in establishing a comfortable lead at the break, with Nyari outlining just how effective he's been as an attacking force this term:

Fabiano: F

There aren't many goalkeepers who can emerge from a game with much dignity after conceding six goals, and Porto stopper Fabiano is no exception to that rule.

Against opposition of Bayern's strength, even a world-class guardian can be made to look vulnerable. But as Champions League winner Peter Schmeichel attests, Fabiano looked uncomfortable, and the floodgates opened:

Thomas Muller: A+

If Lewandowski is the finishing expert among Guardiola's ranks, then forward Thomas Muller is the multifaceted tool fit for any occasion that helps this Bayern Munich side so regularly.

Scoring one and assisting two more—all in the space of 13 minutes—Muller made those markers around him look as though they were moving in slow motion while he took advantage at his fast and fluid best.

Post-Match Reaction

Even in the record books of great results under Guardiola's command, Tuesday's demolition will have gone down as an incredibly satisfying win for all those linked to Bayern Munich.

Not least of those in admiration of the performance by Tuesday's hosts was Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who was quoted by the club's official Twitter account as saying:

Meanwhile, Porto boss Lopetegui was humbled in defeat, and although he admitted that Tuesday's hosts are the far superior side, he held his own head high in defence of the Dragons:

Having given such a superb account of their ability, one might not think any Bayern player would feel surprise at the result, but star man Muller showed that not to be the case:

This performance will have the Bundesliga titans feeling invincible, but Guardiola will be only too swift to remind his men of the calamity that unfolded in Portugal not even a week ago.

Moving toward the semi-finals, Der FCB will be working to ensure no such upsets block their stride as they seek to push on and use this hammering as a foundation for the fixtures ahead.
