Kolkata Ease Past Diligent Delhi
3 of 3
Kolkata Knight Riders (147/4) beat Delhi Daredevils (146/8) by six wickets
The Kolkata Knight Riders put in arguably their best performance of the 2015 Indian Premier League, getting the better of the Delhi Daredevils in a fairly lopsided encounter.
As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo prior to the match, the Daredevils were looking put an end to their wretched record on home soil:
"#DD last eight matches at the Feroz Shah Kotla (most recent first): L L L L L L L L. #IPL #DDvKKR #KKR
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 20, 2015"
After winning the toss and deciding to field, it was clear Gambhir thought there was something in this pitch for his bowlers. The Kolkata captain proved to be correct in his assessment, as the Daredevils struggled to ascertain any rhythm throughout their innings.
The Knight Riders made a couple of critical early breakthroughs, with Mayank Agarwal dismissed in the second over for just one, before the dangerous JP Duminy was also out for five in the fifth over of the day.
It was a credit to the captaincy of Gambhir that the Knight Riders made some sharp inroads, as noted here by HoldingWilleyCricket:
"Leg slip, slip, and silly point all in for Narine. Aggressive captaincy from Gambhir. #DDvsKKR
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 20, 2015"
The reigning champions did meet some resistance in the middle order, though. Shreyas Iyer—just 20 years old—made 31 while fourth man in Manoj Tiwary bagged a diligent 32. But the runs were coming at a pretty arduous pace, giving Kolkata an unerring sense of control.
That stranglehold was strengthened with the dismissals of both of the aforementioned players, and when the destructive Yuvraj Singh was stumped hopelessly out of his ground for just 21, a meagre score was on the cards for the Daredevils. Eventually, thanks to some late hitting from Angelo Mathews—who made 28 off 21 balls—they crawled to 146 for eight.
Great credit must go to the KKR players, especially Umesh Yadav and Piyush Chawla. They both bowled economically and picked up four wickets between them; as noted by former India player Sanjay Manjrekar, the former in particular was very impressive:
"If KKR win this Umesh Yadav's last over would have a lot to do with it. Seeing some maturity & calm confidence from Yadav this IPL.
— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) April 20, 2015"
While 147 should be a relatively simple target, with the wicket clearly causing problems for the batsmen, Gambhir and Robin Uthappa couldn’t afford to come out all guns blazing. The opening duo did initially play studiously, but they were jolted into life in the fifth over when Domnic Joseph had the latter and Manish Pandey was dismissed.
As we can see, his astute bowling heaped some pressure back onto the Knight Riders:
"Excellent over from Domnic Joseph. 4 and 2 wickets from it. W 0 0 W 4 0 2-0-10-2 is a good start for any bowler. #DDvsKKR
— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 20, 2015"
But the skipper kept things ticking along nicely, putting away the loose deliveries from Kolkata and chipping away at the required run rate. Suryakumar Yadav came in and tried to up the ante alongside him, making 24 from just 16 balls before he was caught off the bowling of Nathan Coulter-Nile.
The rate remained very healthy, however, and with plenty of wickets in hand, Kolkata were in cruise control over the course of the last 10 overs. Gambhir was eventually out for 60 with the match wrapped up, leaving Yusuf Pathan alongside him, who chipped in with an entertaining unbeaten 40, to finish the job alongside Ryan ten Doeschate.
As noted by Cricket Record, Gambhir is something of an expert in 20-over cricket:
"Most scores of 50+ in T20 matches: Chris Gayle 59, DWarner/BHodge 44, Gautam Gambhir 39*, RSharma/BMcCullum 35, SRaina/SMarsh 34. #IPL
— Cricket Record (@cricinfo_record) April 20, 2015"
After two wins in a row, Delhi were potentially very awkward opponents for the 2014 champions. But Kolkata went about their work with the kind of composure you would expect of a team that has enjoyed recent success. Despite a couple of wickets early on in the match, they were eminently unflustered in their pursuit of the target.
