5 Things I'd Change About College Football

Wes FreasAug 27, 2009

Picking five things I don't like about college football is like trying to pick apart Megan Fox...it's almost impossible, right? I mean, what's not to like? Well, in our constant quest to seek perfection, there are five things I take issue with and would change if I could. Sound off if you have more!

1. Power teams playing powder-puff non-conference schedules. I guess as long as this strategy keeps working in terms of BCS bids, it'll continue. But here are several examples:

Texas - Louisiana-Monroe, UTEP, Wyoming and Central Florida

LSU - Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, Louisiana Tech

Florida - Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International

C'mon guys, the game needs more USC v Ohio State, Oregon v Boise St. and Arizona State v Georgia games than these easy lay ups.

2. The automatic BCS bids for conference champions. We should be awarding the best 12 teams in college football with BCS berths, regardless of conference affiliation. So what if the SEC or Big 12 gets three teams in? You're telling me that Texas Tech (last year) wasn't better than Cincinnati? If the ACC or Big East can't produce a conference champion in the top 12 of the rankings, they shouldn't get in. Hopefully, with Utah, Boise St. and TCU all preseason top 25 this year, and no Big East team represented, this concept will continue to gain some momentum.

3. Different instant replay rules for different conferences. How hard is it? It would be like the AFC having one set of replay challenge rules and the NFC having another one. Pick a technology vendor, put the rules in place and uniformly enforce them. Just ask Oklahoma if they'd vote for this one (remember Oregon?).

4. Student sections being relegated to the far reaches of most stadiums. This is also a major contention of mine in college basketball, but that's another rant. All universities should be mandated to create student sections that run end zone to end zone for 30 rows up. It's about the kids!

5. Overpriced tickets. Each school in the NCAA should make available 5,000 'game day only' seats for $10 or less. College football is, by a wide margin, one of the best family experiences you can get. The entire game-day ritual and the friends and families that are made and are long-lasting is under siege by the all-mighty dollar. Let's hope more chancellors and university presidents don't take this great game for granted and continue to price many fans and alumni out of the market.

What would you change?
