Ohio State Football Recruiting Offers of the Week
The spring game turned out to be Ohio State's biggest recruiting event of the year, producing five commitments for the 2016 and 2017 classes.
Coming off that successful weekend, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes sent out two new offers last week to a pair of highly rated 2016 prospects.
Here's a rundown of Ohio State's latest offers.
Javon McKinley, 4-Star Wide Receiver (2016)
The Buckeyes kicked off the week with a bang by offering one of the top wide receivers in the country in 4-star Javon McKinley.
A 6'2", 185-pound standout from Corona, California, McKinley is rated the No. 13 wide receiver and the No. 101 prospect overall. The Buckeyes were the 20th school to offer, joining a list that's led by Notre Dame, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.
Unlike other elite receiver prospects who use their superior athleticism to thrive at the high school level, McKinley is already a polished route-runner who can get open against man or zone coverages. But that doesn't mean he lacks speed—McKinley consistently pulled away from opposing defenses during his successful junior season, and he even proved himself as a dangerous returner.
The Buckeyes have a lot of ground to make up in order to become a serious threat for his commitment. USC is the heavy favorite, according to 247Sports' Crystal Ball predictions, with Notre Dame coming in as a distant second.
Caleb Kelly, 5-Star Linebacker (2016)
Meyer kept his attention turned to California later in the week, offering 5-star outside linebacker Caleb Kelly out of Fresno on Wednesday.
The nation's No. 19 prospect overall and the third-ranked outside linebacker, Kelly boasts offers from most of the top programs in the country, including Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Oregon and USC. Everyone is trailing Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma Sooners, who are the unanimous pick to land Kelly, according to 247Sports' Crystal Ball.
Does that mean the Buckeyes are completely out of it?
Not according to Kelly, who told Land Grant Holy Land's Austin Kemp that there are plenty of reasons to like Ohio State.
"Of course winning the national championship stands out, but the recruits I've talked to haven't said anything bad," Kelly said, via Kemp.
The Buckeyes can also show Kelly the recent success of Ryan Shazier and Darron Lee—two players with a similar skill set who have thrived in Columbus. The 6'3", 215-pound linebacker could be a nightmare in the Buckeyes' scheme—used as a do-everything backer who could rush the passer off the edge.
It will be tough to beat out Oklahoma, which was the first school to offer Kelly, but the Buckeyes would have a shot if they can get him on campus for an official visit.
