Georgia Football: Projecting Bulldogs' Post-Spring 2-Deep Depth Chart

Brian JonesApr 20, 2015

Now that spring practice is over for the Georgia Bulldogs, the countdown to the 2015 season begins.

There are still some things the Bulldogs need to take care of in order to get ready for fall Saturdays in Athens. First come the summer workouts, which are then followed by fall camp. This year’s fall camp will be interesting because there will be new freshmen—such as Trent Thompson and Terry Godwin—in the mix in terms of the depth chart.

Speaking of the depth chart, what does it look like now that spring practice is over? Who would be the starters and the reserves if the season were to start right now?

Here’s a look at the post-spring two-deep depth chart for the Bulldogs.

Quarterback

1 of 7

Starter: Brice Ramsey

Reserve: Faton Bauta

This is not set in stone, and this will more than likely change by the end of fall camp. But as of right now, Brice Ramsey would be the starting quarterback and Faton Bauta would be the backup.

This is based on experience, as Ramsey got significant playing time towards the end of the season. Ramsey can make all the throws, but he does need more polishing.

Bauta has made some strides this spring. He’s becoming more of a pro-style quarterback instead of a guy who makes plays with his legs.

Jacob Park will also be in the mix this fall. He had a solid spring, but because of experience, he did not get as many snaps as he would have liked.

Running Back

2 of 7

Starter: Nick Chubb

Reserve: Sony Michel

Both Nick Chubb and Sony Michel did not do a ton of work this spring. The coaches were resting Chubb because of the workload he had to do in the fall, and Michel injured his collarbone during spring practice.

However, despite the production out of A.J. Turman this spring, Chubb and Michel are the two best backs on the roster. Turman and Keith Marshall will see some action this fall, but Chubb and Michel did well last season, and when both are healthy, they are tough to stop.

As for the fullback position, it’s Quayvon Hicks' job to lose. He has versatility because he can also play H-back and tight end if needed.

Receivers and Tight Ends

3 of 7

Receivers

Starters: Malcolm Mitchell, Justin Scott-Wesley

Reserves: Isaiah McKenzie, Reggie Davis

Tight Ends

Starter: Jay Rome

Reserve: Jeb Blazevich

If Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley look like the players of 2012, then the Bulldogs will have a very strong receiving corps.

After suffering ACL injuries in 2013, they came back to the lineup last season, but they were not as explosive. But other than the shoulder injury Mitchell suffered in the spring game, the duo is healthy, and both look to do some big things this season.

Isaiah McKenzie will be another player to watch for the Bulldogs this season. After making a name for himself as a returner last season, he will look to do the same as a No. 3 receiver.

As far as the tight ends go, Jay Rome was behind Jeb Blazevich in terms of the depth chart. However, according to Jake Rowe of 247Sports, both were sharing reps with the No. 1 team in the final practices of spring. Expect both Rome and Blazevich to see a lot of playing time this fall.

Offensive Line

4 of 7

Starters: John Theus, Brandon Kublanow, Isaiah Wynn, Greg Pyke, Kolton Houston

Reserves: Hunter Long, Dyshon Sims, Aulden Bynum, Thomas Swilley, Josh Cardiello

The offensive line looks the same as last season except the center position. With David Andrews gone, the Bulldogs are looking for a replacement. Isaiah Wynn got the most snaps with the first team, but the coaches are also looking at Hunter Long and Brandon Kublanow.

Regardless of who gets the job at center, Wynn, Long and Dyshon Sims will be part of the offensive line rotation. And if the offensive line wants to duplicate the success it had last season, the reserves will have to be on top of their games.

Defensive Line

5 of 7

Starters: Josh Dawson, John Atkins, Sterling Bailey

Reserves: James DeLoach, Chris Mayes, Jonathan Ledbetter

Sterling Bailey and Josh Dawson take over at defensive end with Ray Drew and Toby Johnson gone. It’s not going to be a big deal, because both players participated in every game last season.

John Atkins will likely be the starter at the nose tackle position, but he is going up against Chris Mayes, who was a starter on the defensive line two years ago. Mayes did have a productive spring, so it could be interesting to see how those two perform in the fall.

True freshman Jonathan Ledbetter did some good things this spring, and he has a very good chance of making the defensive line rotation.

Linebackers

6 of 7

Starters: Jordan Jenkins, Tim Kimbrough, Reggie Carter, Leonard Floyd

Reserves: Lorenzo Carter, Jake Ganus, Ryne Rankin, Davin Bellamy

The inside linebacker position will be different because Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson are gone. However, Tim Kimbrough and Reggie Carter saw significant action at the inside linebacker position last season, and they were solid in the spring game, as Carter tallied eight tackles, while Kimbrough notched three.

The outside linebacker position is as strong as it has ever been. Jordan Jenkins, Leonard Floyd and Lorenzo Carter can make plays in the backfield, and each has the ability to record 10 sacks this season.

Jake Ganus, a transfer from UAB, will be a player to watch this year. He made a big impact with his play this spring, and he will see a lot of action at inside linebacker.

Secondary

7 of 7

Starters: Devin Bowman, Aaron Davis, Quincy Mauger, Dominick Sanders

Reserves: Malkom Parrish, Jarvis Wilson, Tramel Terry, Johnathan Abram

This group improved last season, and everyone except for Damian Swann is back for another go-round.

The biggest difference is the emergence of freshmen Jarvis Wilson and Johnathan Abram. Both safeties got a lot of work done this spring, and they look like players who can make key contributions this fall.

As far as the starters go, watch for Aaron Davis. He had some good and bad moments last season, but with him being the only player from the Black team secondary to get a pass breakup in the spring game, Davis could be a guy that takes the next step.
