WWE's Tag Team Division Would Benefit from a Dudley Boyz Reunion

Graham GSM MatthewsApr 21, 2015

For all the things WWE has done right since WrestleMania 31, including elevating Seth Rollins and revamping the Divas division, the tag team division remains a glaring flaw.

While the state of tag team wrestling is nowhere near as bad as it was a year ago, there is still plenty of room for improvement, and its resurgence must start with bringing back The Dudley Boyz.

At the 2015 Royal Rumble, Bubba Ray Dudley received one of the loudest reactions of the night from the Philadelphia crowd when he made his surprise return during the Rumble match. Granted, the event emanated from ECW country, but the fans were still extremely excited to see Bubba back in the WWE fold for the first time in nearly a decade.

Although his one-off appearance led to speculation that he might sign a new deal with the company, that wasn't the case, as he hasn't been seen since. However, following the stellar showing he had in the annual Battle Royal, there has to be at least some interest from WWE to re-sign him.

As strong of a singles competitor as he could be in WWE, it's doubtful he'd be given as much free rein as he had in TNA as Bully Ray. That said, he and Devon would be be excellent additions to the dwindling tag team division.

For the six years they were with WWE, The Dudley Boyz dominated the tag team scene, winning the tag team titles a total of 10 times. Additionally, they left their mark on the business in their classic series of matches with Edge and Christian and The Hardy Boyz in the early 2000s.

There's no doubt that there's a spot waiting for them in the WWE Hall of Fame someday, but their most recent tenure in TNA proved that they still have a lot left in the tank. Their various matches with The Hardyz and The Wolves in late 2014 were all extraordinary and were among TNA's best bouts of the year.

With both of them no longer under contract to the organization, now would be as good a time as any for WWE give them their deserved one last run.

Since joining forces in December, Cesaro and Tyson Kidd have worked as a cohesive unit and have renewed interest in the tag team division. Within months of them aligning, they quickly won the WWE Tag Team Championship from The Usos at February's Fastlane pay-per-view.

From their natural chemistry and charisma to their amazing abilities in the ring, they have all the tools necessary to be a successful pairing. The only thing missing from the equation is a quality set of opponents who will give them a run for their money.

Likewise, champions are only as good as those who challenge them, and without credible competition, Cesaro and Kidd can't have the reign they're capable of having.

Aside from The Lucha Dragons, there aren't many strong challengers for Cesaro and Kidd at the moment: The Ascension and The Prime Time Players are sparingly seen on TV, very few people care about The New Day and Los Matadores and The Usos are out of commission for the foreseeable future following Jey's shoulder injury during a SmackDown taping in March.

While I'm not at all suggesting that The Dudley Boyz be the ones to take the twin titles off Cesaro and Kidd, simply being in the ring with the duo would elevate both them and the straps. Moreover, the matches they could produce would be nothing short of spectacular.

As record-breaking 23-time tag team champions, The Dudley Boyz can lend a lot of credibility working with the young up-and-comers. With a win over the ECW originals, Cesaro and Kidd can truly solidify themselves as one of the greatest tandems this company has seen in some time.

WWE hasn't hesitated in bringing back ECW alumni in the past (Rob Van Dam and Rhyno) to put over the rookies on the roster, and The Dudley Boyz should be no different. It'd be a major step toward restoring prestige to the tag team division, along with giving Bubba Ray and D-Von the farewell tour they've earned.
