Resurgent Delhi Looking to Topple Holders

After ending their 11-match losing streak in IPL matches with a victory over Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils resemble a team emboldened.
That triumph over the 2014 runners-up preceded a victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad and they’ll be hoping to make it three in a row when they take on the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders.
As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, all of Delhi’s matches have been thrilling to watch:
It may sound peculiar, but the Daredevils probably gained some confidence from their first two defeats. They were incredibly unlucky to lose both matches against Chennai and Rajasthan after all and those kinds of performances proved they can mix it with the very best sides in the competition.

The challenge for this team will be to preserve the levels that have enabled them to take two wins from two matches. But the Knight Riders will pose a stiff challenge, especially after a morale-boosting win over Kings XI in a repeat of last year’s final showdown.
As noted by former India star Aakash Chopra, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell was the star of the show in that one, taking two wickets before smashing 66 runs from 36 deliveries:
Russell is a player capable of taking a game away from any team, whether via his astute contributions with the ball or a bludgeoning batting display. The dilemma for the Knight Riders is deciding whether or not to push him up the order on the back of his match-winning effort in the win over Kings XI.

After all, Russell is clearly in confident mood, as illustrated here by the tournament’s official Twitter account:
Despite their renewed confidence, it’s tough to see Delhi having the quality required to get over the line in this one. Kolkata have been a little hit and miss in the opening weeks of the competition, but there were some small signs in their win over Kings XI that they are beginning to rediscover their best. In Russell, they have a genuine match-winner too.
Expect Delhi to take this game down to the wire, but for the champion instincts of the Knight Riders to come to the fore when the pressure bites.
