Alabama Football: Winners and Losers from Crimson Tide's 2015 Spring
Spring practice has concluded for the Alabama Crimson Tide, and it was a very interesting one to say the least.
From the quarterback battles, remodeling the secondary and the off-field issues, head coach Nick Saban is probably glad this part of the 2015 year is over so the Tide can really get to work in the summer and fall.
But which players stood out for the Tide this spring? And who had a spring they would like to forget?
Here are the winners and losers from the Crimson Tide's 2015 spring practice and game.
Winners: ArDarius Stewart and Robert Foster
1 of 4
There is no question Alabama will miss Amari Cooper's talent and production, but ArDarius Stewart and Robert Foster could be the playmakers the Tide need in order to win the SEC title once again.
Stewart was on fire in the spring game, catching eight passes for 118 yards and scoring twice. This isn't too surprising, since Alex Scarborough of ESPN.com noted Stewart emerged as a playmaker last season and was a player to watch during A-Day.
Stewart and Foster, who had eight receptions for 118 yards, were named co-MVPs of the spring game. They have a chance to be one of the better receiving tandems in the conference once they get the quarterback situation settled.
In his postgame press conference, head coach Nick Saban remarked: "I was very pleased with the way our two young receivers played today. They both made plays, they both played with confidence.
Winner: Kenyan Drake
2 of 4
Kenyan Drake didn't put up any gaudy numbers during the spring game, carrying the ball just five times for 13 yards.
But the reason for that is he was wearing a black jersey, which meant he couldn't take any contact.
Drake suffered a leg injury last year and missed the majority of the season, but he has made his way back looked like his normal self in the spring game.
Here's what Saban told Michael Casagrande of Al.com about Drake during A-Day:
"Kenyan Drake looked good all spring. Holding out contact was "a business decision" to reduce injury threat after broken leg. He's almost full speed at this point.
"
With T.J. Yeldon gone, Drake and Derrick Henry are the top backs on the roster. Drake may not be the starter, but because he can also play receiver, Drake is going to be big for the offense this fall.
Loser: Quarterbacks
3 of 4
This is not to say all five quarterbacks had bad spring practices, but nobody stood out from the pack when spring practice came to an end.
Out of the five who played in the spring game, Jake Coker was the best, going 14-of-28 with 183 yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, he was 4-of-12 in the third quarter, and the interception he threw was returned for a touchdown.
The other four quarterbacks also failed to impress in the spring game. David Cornwell threw for 110 yards and one touchdown, but the unit as a whole made too many bad decisions and was trying to make too many big plays.
Here's what Saban told Al.com after the game about the quarterbacks and the reason for the struggles:
"This game was set up to give QBs an opportunity. The guys who played with second team were in a bad place partially because of depth on the line.
"
Odds are Coker will get the starting nod, but he will need to have a better fall in order for that to happen.
Winners: Linebackers
4 of 4
Despite giving up 27 points to the first-team offense in the spring game, the linebackers have a chance to be really special this year. Reggie Ragland and Rueben Foster each had seven tackles in the spring game. Also, Tim Williams had five tackles and one sack, and Dillon Lee recorded three tackles, one sack and one interception.
If there is a real strength to this team, it would be the linebackers; they are fast, they can hit and they don't make mental mistakes. It will be fun to watch the group starting in September.
