IPL 2015 Results: Mumbai vs. Chennai Scorecard, Updated Table and Schedule
Chennai Super Kings preserved their unbeaten Indian Premier League record with a six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Friday, riding their strong group of batsmen after their bowling had left them down in the first innings.
Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard obliterated the Chennai bowlers during the middle overs after a dreadful start from Mumbai's openers, and with a total of 183, it looked as if Mumbai had a real chance of finally getting their first win.
But the Super Kings answered by way if Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith, who easily kept pace with the required run rate and nearly embarrassed the likes of Lasith Malinga in the early overs. Chennai's depth took care of the rest, as the team cruised to an easy win to close the gap with IPL leaders Rajasthan Royals to just two points.

Chennai Preserve Perfect Record, Beat Mumbai
3 of 3
Chennai Super Kings (189/4) beat Mumbai Indians (183/7) by six wickets
Chennai walked out to a comfortable win over Mumbai on Friday, riding their red-hot groups of batsmen to a big win with plenty of overs to spare.
The Indians arguably put together their finest performance of the tournament so far, reaching a respectable target of 183, but Chennai's openers obliterated the opposition from the start, all but ending the contest early in the second innings.
Slow starts have been a problem for Mumbai, as shared by ESPN Cricinfo's Freddie Wilde, and Friday's match against Chennai was no different:
"#MI’s opening partnership have averaged 9 in this #IPL and their first three wickets have averaged 27. #MIvCSK #CSK
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 17, 2015"
Parthiv Patel was lost on the first ball he faced, Lendl Simmons only managed a meager five runs and Corey Anderson was caught after seven balls, as the first three Indians' batsmen managed just seven runs.
The Mumbai innings:
| Lendl Simmons | c Francois du Plessis b Ishwar Pandey | 5 | 13 | 38.46 | 1 | 0 | |
| Parthiv Patel | lbw Ashish Nehra | 0 | 1 | 0.00 | 0 | 0 | |

| Ravichandran Ashwin | 1 | 13 | 0 | 13.00 | 2 | |
| Dwayne Bravo | 4 | 30 | 2 | 7.50 | 7 | |
But the guys in the middle of the order soon settled in. Rohit Sharma worked his way to a patient 50, first partnering with Harbhajan Singh, who impressed Wilde:
"That awkward moment when Harbhajan Singh looks like a better batsman than most of #MI’s top-order…#IPL #MIvCSK #CSK
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 17, 2015"
When he was caught for 24 from 21, West Indies' Kieron Pollard stepped up and delivered a batting masterclass. Pollard smashed an incredible 64 runs from just 30 deliveries, including nine boundaries, before getting caught by Dwayne Smith.
The Indians' Twitter account loved what they were seeing:
"Polly show is on at the Wankhede and the paltan is loving it! POLLARD POLLARD!!! #ApunKaSuperstar #MI #JioWankhede pic.twitter.com/TLFLfl9wL8
— Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) April 17, 2015
"
The flurry helped push Mumbai's run rate past nine, giving them an excellent chance of defending the eventual target of 183. With Chennai's bowling struggling through the middle overs, it looked as if Mumbai would be able to spring the upset and finally collect their first win of the season.
The Super Kings openers had other ideas, however. Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith made a mockery of Mumbai's bowling attack in the first few overs, finding the boundary with ridiculous consistency. Wilde was shocked:
"In a Test match teams score 72 in a session. #CSK are 72-0 after five overs. Five. #IPL #MIvCSK #MI #CSK
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 17, 2015"
The duo combined for a century in almost no time, before Singh managed to take them out in the same innings, twice forcing easy catches. Faf Du Plessis and Suresh Raina replaced the openers, and carried on knocking the ball all over the pitch, to the dismay of the Mumbai fans.
Chennai's innings:
| Dwayne Smith | c Rohit Sharma b Harbhajan Singh | 62 | 30 | 206.66 | 8 | 4 | |
| Brendon McCullum | c Vinay Kumar b Harbhajan Singh | 46 | 20 | 230.00 | 6 | 2 | |

| EXTRAS | (nb 3, w 8) | 11 | |||||
| TOTAL | (4 wickets; 16.4 overs) | 189 | |||||
| Pawan Suyal | 3 | 28 | 0 | 9.33 | 6 | |

| Vinay Kumar | 2 | 18 | 0 | 9.00 | 5 | |
| Kieron Pollard | 1.4 | 26 | 1 | 15.60 | 2 | |
It took a perfect yorker from Lasith Malinga to halt the onslaught, dismissing Du Plessis by going middle stump. Raina continued his patient work, however, and paired with the proficient MS Dhoni, Chennai soon had their target in sight.
Dwayne Bravo eventually knocked the deciding runs out of the park in the 17th over, sealing the win in emphatic fashion.
According to Sharma, Mumbai's attitude remains the biggest problem, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo:
"Our attitude was not right. To bat and get 184 was par on this track. We didn't execute the bowling plans well, there's no way they could get 90 in six overs, that's where they won it. We need to go back and see what we are doing wrong. If you don't win then there's something wrong in the combination which we have been trying to get right. We are not thinking of our next game right now, we need to relax and take it easy.
"
The nightmare continues for Mumbai, who have been hit by a wave of injuries and simply can't find a way to play consistent cricket for a full match. Chennai are cruising toward the play-offs, and while Rajasthan Royals look like the team to beat right now, the Super Kings have to feel good about their chances of winning this year's title.
