Breaking Down the Best and Worst of the WWE for Week of April 13

Ryan DilbertApr 17, 2015

It's hard to get lost in a stellar bout like Neville vs. Sheamus when news of Daniel Bryan's health issues echoes in one's mind.

WWE delivered some excellent matches this week, two of which featured Neville. In addition, Naomi made the most out of a surprising heel turn and NXT nabbed one of the independent circuit's best talents. Even with all those reasons to cheer, it wasn't a celebratory week for Bryan fans.

The lingering effects of his injuries overshadow everything from Neville's performances to the odd route WWE went with for the Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler match.

Fans in London saw Bryan compete in tag team action to close Thursday's SmackDown. Doubts about when we will see him strap on his wrestling boots again leave one with a sinking feeling.

Best: Neville Shines Again

1 of 5

Neville looks very much at home on the main roster. In just a few weeks as part of WWE proper, The Man Who Gravity Forgot has looked great.

He produced two more quality matches this week. His first effort was an exciting bout against Dolph Ziggler on Monday's Raw. He showed both his high-flying skills and storytelling acumen. Neville's not just an athlete performing stunts out there; he's a standout, all-around competitor.

That was on display when he collided with Sheamus on Thursday's SmackDown. Intense, wielding kicks like hammers and thrilling fans with his aerial moves, Neville flourished opposite Sheamus.

While guys like Adam Rose and Bo Dallas struggled out of the staring gate, Neville is making WWE look smart for having confidence in him.

Expect him to continue to get high-profile opportunities. He's been impressive each time out. WWE is surely taking notice and planning accordingly.

Worst: Kiss My Arse Match Set

2 of 5

A steel cage awaits Randy Orton and Seth Rollins. The sounds of a chain beating against flesh is promised to John Cena and Rusev.

As for Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus' trip to Extreme Rules, they are going with something far less extreme—a Kiss My Arse match.

This is essentially a standard bout with the added stipulation that the loser has to kiss the other's buttocks. That is one of those ideas that should have been balled up and thrown in the trashcan. It's too silly for this pay-per-view and for these wrestlers.

It doesn't fit their feud either. Going from ambushes and fisticuffs to puckered lips makes little sense.

Count on Ziggler and The Celtic Warrior making the most of it, but just try not to think of all the entertaining stipulations WWE could have gone with instead.

Best: Naomi Surprisingly Good as a Heel

3 of 5

Add one more heel to the villain-heavy Divas division. In a surprise move, WWE turned Naomi on Monday's Raw, having her beat down Paige.

As out-of-the-blue a moment that was, it worked because of Naomi's moral code and a strong performance. She's growing more aggressive because she is tired of getting passed over for title shots. That makes perfect sense.

There's a story to dive into here. WWE can have her continue to grow more angry, perhaps to the point of losing her mind. She can also go out and try to prove herself by attacking other women.

Whatever path it takes, WWE knows it stumbled onto surprise success. As natural a babyface as Naomi is, she looked good in her first interview as a heel. This was the most compelling she has been to date.

Watching her explore that character is going to be fun.

Worst: Daniel Bryan Hurting

4 of 5

The story of Daniel Bryan's neck and arm injuries isn't over, even a year after his surgery.

According to F4WOnline (h/t Wrestling Inc), Bryan is reportedly not doing well from a health standpoint thanks to lingering issues stemming from those previous injuries. That was seemingly confirmed days later when Bryan was no longer advertised for dates on the European tour.

WWE later sent an email statement to F4WOnline that stated, "Daniel Bryan has been removed from the remainder of WWE’s UK tour as a precautionary measure."

That's certainly not the kind of news Bryan or his fans want to hear. It's clear he's not over what forced him to vacate the WWE world title last year. Now WWE has to wonder what's ahead for the popular star.

Is he headed toward an early retirement, or is this just a snag in his recovery?

Fans will be hoping for the latter. Having Bryan back has been a blast, even if he hasn't been featured in singles matches as often.

Best: Uhaa Nation Officially a Member of NXT

5 of 5

The already loaded developmental system just landed another blue-chip prospect.

WWE.com announced that the performance center is welcoming 11 new recruits. The most notable name on this list is Uhaa Nation (real name: Sesugh Uhaa). Uhaa is a spectacular talent who made his name with the Dragon Gate promotion.

Men who can powerbomb someone with the ease that he can don't normally also pull off high-flying moves. And men capable of doing standing Shooting Star Presses don't usually look like bodybuilders. Uhaa is no ordinary prospect, though.

He's blessed with a number of physical gifts and has shown in his short time as a wrestler that his potential is expansive.

Before long, we'll be seeing him wow crowds at NXT and after that doing the same on the main roster. Uhaa is going to leave a major imprint on the company.
