Best Names in the Field

It seems only fitting that International Star would be among the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby. The horse has won three consecutive races, including the Louisiana Derby, and has lived up to its moniker. Of course, winning the Derby and perhaps the Triple Crown would truly be the work of an international star, so this horse has its work cut out for it.
Bob Baffert's Dortmund might cause a few soccer fans and supporters of the club Borussia Dortmund to take notice. The undefeated horse took the Santa Anita Derby and has the pace and power of, say, Marco Reus.
It's also the favorite in this race by the slightest of margins, according to Richard Rosenblatt of The Associated Press, via The Augusta Chronicle:
"For now, here’s the verdict: In a photo finish, it’s big, bold, unbeaten Dortmund over his swift, smooth-striding stablemate American Pharoah.
Dortmund is No. 1 in the AP’s final Run to the Roses Top 10 Derby contenders, and ends up going wire to wire in the weekly rankings. He’s 6 for 6, and the fact he’s battle tested bodes well for his chances in a 20-horse cavalry charge in the Derby.
"
American Pharoah is no slouch of a name (or a racer), either. Famous trainer D. Wayne Lukas thinks American Pharoah will live up to its regal name, dubbing the horse the favorite, per Jennie Rees of The Courier-Journal:
"I don't think there's any doubt about it. Sometimes a horse like that comes along. We also say, 'The Derby, a lot of time the best horse doesn't win.' All the usual. But to me, first of all, American Pharoah has a world-class rider. Secondly, he's got a trainer who darn sure knows what to do and has been there and done it. And he's got the style that you want if you're a trainer. He lays really close or on the pace, and then he's got a devastating kick.
"
A great name, a great trainer and a great kick? That's a recipe for success. And while Rosenblatt is picking Dortmund to win this race, most folks think American Pharoah will take the win.
Of course, all of these horses are looking to seize the day. But Carpe Diem is the one horse who has that philosophy right in the name. You have to love that. Of course, to seize the day, you have to stay frosty, which shouldn't be a problem for Frosted.
The losers of this race often feel as though they've been left on the firing line, the Triple Crown cruelly out of their grasp. Never will that have felt more true than if Firing Line actually wins, of course. And at the Derby, there are often surprise winners that no one saw coming. Could Upstart be one of them?
We'll find out on Saturday.
