UCLA Football: Week 2 Spring Practice Stock Report
Week two of spring ball has been an interesting one for the UCLA football team.
A few minor injuries have tested the wide receiver corps depth (as reported by Jack Wang of the Los Angeles Daily News). Multiple position changes have also taken place.
Quarterback Aaron Sharp is now a receiver. Offensive guard Najee Toran has moved to defensive tackle, and fellow offensive lineman Colby Cyburt is now a tight end. Lastly, linebacker Dwight Williams has transitioned to safety.
Outside of the minor injuries, it's been a positive week of practice. Three players in particular have been performing very well. Two of the athletes in question are pushing for a starting spot. A third has potentially put himself in poll position for arguably the most significant position on the field.
Here's a look at three Bruins making a push during the second week of spring practice.
Kolton Miller
1 of 3
At 6'8", 300 pounds, redshirt freshman offensive tackle Kolton Miller is a mountain of man.
One would usually equate his stature with that of a lumbering offensive lineman. However, by the sound of Miller's play during the spring camp, he's bucking that stereotype.
The Roseville, California, native has been getting first-team reps at right tackle (as reported by Wang). David Woods of BruinReportOnline.com reported (subscription required) Miller "[is] moving better than any right tackle UCLA has thrown out this spring. [Miller] is flashing quite a bit of potential and talent this spring."
Miller's ability to bend for such a tall athlete is impressive. His penchant for moving laterally also gives him an advantage against smaller, quicker players out on the edge.
Miller should be able to provide UCLA with quality depth at tackle. If his development continues, he has the potential to be a very good tackle prospect.
Marcus Rios
2 of 3Two years ago, there was no guarantee Marcus Rios would ever continue his football career.
Now, he looks primed to win a starting spot. The corner out of Elk Grove, California, has had a fantastic spring period. Rios has utilized his natural athleticism and length to truly stand out. Much of this is due to the fact he's finally gained back the requisite strength and weight to compete on the collegiate level.
Defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin has been particularly effusive in his praise of Rios. As reported by Wang, Rios has been taking the first-team reps at corner opposite of returning starter Fabian Moreau.
A healthy Rios gives UCLA another long, athletic corner. His competitiveness and drive to return to the field is truly inspiring.
Josh Rosen
3 of 3
For the second week in a row, Josh Rosen is making a push to be named as the starting quarterback.
Ed Lewis of Rivals.com and Joey Kaufman of the Orange County Register both believe Rosen has been the most impressive quarterback on the roster throughout the camp.
Jordan Payton has spoken about "how impressive" Rosen has been in digesting the offensive scheme thus far. He also went on to say how he has "great potential."
It's doubtful Rosen will be named the starter at the conclusion of spring practice. Realistically, UCLA probably won't name a starter until the fall camp. This could be done in order to temper the media's expectations of its extremely talented freshman signal-caller.
Regardless, it's hard to ignore how well Rosen has been doing thus far early in his UCLA career.
