Georgia Football: Grading the Bulldogs Position Groups' 2015 Spring

Brian JonesApr 15, 2015

Spring practice will officially end on Thursday for the Georgia Bulldogs. But with the spring game played on Saturday, fans and coaches got a look at what the team is good at and what the team needs to work on moving forward.

The Bulldogs have the talent to be a contender in the SEC and the College Football Playoff, but it was the same story last year and the year before, and they could not put it all together.

There are some positions that are strong and will carry the Bulldogs in the fall. But there are a few positions that will need to do some adjusting in order for them to get back in the SEC title game and beyond.

Here are grades for each position group post-spring practice.

Quarterbacks

1 of 7

Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Jacob Park entered spring practice as the front runners for the starting quarterback job. And they will leave spring practice the same way as there is no real clear-cut No. 1 quarterback.

All three did well during spring practice, but not one of them stood out from the other two. Bauta did have the best spring game, but Ramsey has been getting more snaps with the first-team offense and Park might be the most talented.

This competition is only getting started, and it will make fall camp more intriguing.

Grade: B

Running Backs

2 of 7

The strength of the offense is the running backs, and it was on full display this spring.

However, it wasn’t Nick Chubb or Sony Michel that was getting the attention. The running of A.J. Turman proved the Bulldogs ground game is not going anywhere anytime soon.

In the G-Day game, Turman rushed for 106 yards on 26 carries and scored twice. And in each of the spring scrimmages he took part in, he was the leading rusher.

Chubb’s carries were limited in the scrimmages and the spring game because of the workload he got this past fall. However, he did rush for 34 yards on only three carries and scored once.

Brendan Douglas did not have the numbers this spring, but he’s still a hard runner that is tough to bring down. Michel and Keith Marshall did not see much action this spring due to injuries.

Grade: A

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

3 of 7

The one area where the Bulldogs need the most improvement is at wide receivers and tight ends.

Justin Scott-Wesley, Malcolm Mitchell and Isaiah McKenzie all had strong springs, but Mitchell and McKenzie got injured in the spring game, and Scott-Wesley did not make much of an impact either.

The same thing can be said about the tight ends. Jay Rome, who is the leader of the bunch, told Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he is in the best shape of his career, and he was able to take part in the strength and conditioning program for the first time in two years.

But Rome or Jeb Balzevich never really made a difference in the spring game or scrimmages. However, in the receivers and tight ends defense, the quarterback position is not set in stone yet. Once the order of quarterbacks is in place, the receivers and tight ends should be able to pick things up.

Offensive Line

4 of 7

When the Bulldogs enter the 2015 season, they will only be missing one starter on the offensive line, which is center David Andrews.

It’s good the Bulldogs will have experience at offensive line, but not having Andrews is a blow.

Isaiah Wynn, Hunter Long and Brandon Kublanow have been working at center this spring, but Wynn is the guy who has been the front-runner. He did have a bad snap early in the spring game, but he was able to settle down afterwards and hold his own.

But the rest of the line including Kublanow, Greg Pyke, John Theus and Kolton Houston were fundamentally sound this spring, and they should have a strong 2015 season.

Grade: B+

Defensive Line

5 of 7

Like the offensive line, the defensive line has a lot of depth and experience. Chris Mayes, Sterling Bailey and John Atkins are a few of the names that have seen their share of snaps, and they were able to play well in the G-Day game, especially Bailey, who had four tackles and one sack.

But Bulldogs fans need to watch out for Jonathan Ledbetter, who had a monster spring season. The true freshman stood out in the spring game with seven tackles. He looks like he can contribute right away, which will only make the defense stronger.

And with Trent Thompson coming into the mix in the summer, the defensive line could be as strong as it has ever been.

Grade: A

Linebackers

6 of 7

If running back position is the strength of the offense, than the linebacker position is the strength of the defense.

There will be two new inside linebackers since Ramik Wilson and Amarlo Herrera have graduated. But Reggie Carter and Tim Kimbrough can fly around to the football and they rarely make mistakes. Then there’s Jake Ganus, who was an impact player this spring despite not getting a ton of reps with the first team.

The outside linebackers could be the best in the nation. Jordan Jenkins has gotten better each season, and Lorenzo Carter is on his way to being a star. Leonard Floyd did not play in the spring game because of injuries, but he is the best pass-rusher of the three.

Grade: A+

Secondary

7 of 7

The defense has a chance to be much improved this season, mainly because there is more stability in the secondary despite missing Damian Swann.

Quincy Mauger and Dominick Sanders had productive springs as well as Aaron Davis, who had a pass breakup in the spring game. The secondary has also benefited from having Reggie Wilkerson emerge to the “Star” position. They also were able to have Tramel Terry back in the mix after missing all of last year with an injury.

But the young guys, Jarvis Wilson and Johnathan Abram, have gotten tons of praise for their work, according to Marc Weiszer of the Augusta Chronicle.

It’s clear the secondary is not a weakness for this team, which was an issue a couple of years ago.
